I just replaced the front pads on my 93 Land Cruiser. When I did, I noticed that the pins that go through the calipers and hold the pads in place were corroded, worn, and one was even bent slightly. I reinstalled them for the moment, but I'm thinking I should replace them. I had a problem last fall on my Tundra where the caliper jammed to one side on these pins and wore out a pad in about a week :disgust:

Also, should these pins be lubricated? So much dust & grit in there, I suspect lubrication may just be counter productive.
 
get new pins, They should be pretty cheap. I am not sure where you can buy them though. How bent and rusted are they btw?

No, not the pistons. These are pins, probably 3/16" diameter and 4" or 5" long. They go through the outer caliper, then the brake pads, then the inner caliper and are secured by spring clips on the inside. 2 on each wheel.

They are corroded to the point that there is some pitting, and some slight groove worn in where the pads are against. One was bent enough that you could see it fairly easily.

I'm wondering about where to find replacements also ... do you think an auto parts shop will carry them alone, or possibly just as part of a caliper or rebuild kit? I'll stop by Advance and/or Checker on the way home tonight.

Oh I know what you're talking about now. I don't work on Toyota's a lot mostly Honda's at my house. I'm not sure if they'll carry the parts you need at a local auto part store I've always had trouble finding parts for my cars at Autozone or Kragens I usually have to get it through the dealership.
 
Definitely replace the pins. There should be boots covering the pins to protect them from dirt - it sounds like you need to replace those too. The pins should be lubricated before you put them in - any auto parts store should sell the grease.

Huh. On my Grand Prix there are boots covering parts of the pins. Either way, the pins should be replaced if they're corroded/pitted.

Huh. On my Grand Prix there are boots covering parts of the pins. Either way, the pins should be replaced if they're corroded/pitted.

Seems like a good idea. That's one of the reasons I'm a little concerned about lubing them. Being out in the open, I figure the grease will just collect dirt and maybe end up worse then if you let it dry.

These arent the pins everyone is thinking about. Grand prix cars do not have these pins.

These are not the pins that have the accordian type rubber covering them that allow the caliper front to slide back and forth. These pins actually go in the outside part of the caliper and hold the pads in place.
