I'm not a big fan of the Powerstroke series, and I need a new full size van. The RAM vans aren't in production anymore (Though I don't think Dodge ever gave those diesels), and the Dodge/Freightliner Sprinter 3500's have a puny Mercedes 2.7L diesel. Chevy/GMC don't offer diesels at all. So, what's left? If I pulled an old Econoline off auction or out of a scrapyard or somthing and dropped out the engine, could I realistically drop in a real man's diesel?

didn't dodge use cummings diesels ?

I was in Europe a few weeks ago and saw there really cool Citroen Jumper vans w/diesel engines, but you want an overly_macho motor in a van for a manly man. The Jumper was a cool truck though.

When I visited Paris, my family rented a diesel, 5-speed Renault Espace minivan. It was schweet.

Real man's diesel? Like what? The 7.3 and the new 6.0 are just as if not more capable than the Duramax or the Cummins

GMC/Chevy vans used to have the 6.5L diesels. If you're willing to go used, pick one of those up. Or maybe you can pick up a 30HD series.....same engine, just heavier chassis. Cheers

How about a diesel powered Suburban?

Dodge doesn't use Cummins in the Sprinters, and RAM vans are out of production (Or somehow magically dissapeared from Dodge's online product lineup and all the dealerships)

Suburban would go, but there's the minor issue of having to pay for things like back seats that would have to be removed and thrown away/sold. Looks like I'm stuck going used for at least the chassis.

Dude the Powerstroke 7.3 is the best LT diesel one the market... the Cummins was good but less power then the stroke, also Dodge's Automatic's have a LOT to be desired.. As fas as GM the Detroit is a $h!tcan while the Duramax is great I would only get a 2003 or newer, the first years of Diesels always have bugs..

The 6.0 PS does have cold start issues and I also hear some milage problems.. but those might be just engines not broken in yet, but the cold start issues come from current owners and TSB's

Why does it have to be diesel.

The new engines GM has in their Vans make a pile of power and get good gas milage for you know... a Van.

Yeah... those 2 2003 F350's that Ford bought back from customers of mine because they couldn't keep them running are just a fluke, right? Never mind the other ones in their fleet that are always in the shop.

No thanks.

I'd take a Duramax or Cummins over that Ford POS engine anyday.

Bah, in the real world, we got ~15MPG in our full size GMC van at my old job. That's good??

Why diesel? Believe it or not, fuel availability and cost.

Why not Powerstroke? My uncle has one in his '03 F-350-based Electrician's truck. He's been through two engines and one tranny (The transmission was definitely because of overloading, though)

You betcha. They took a chance by going with Ford for this last fleet changeout. You can bet they'll never do that again!

I have heard about the 6.0 being bought back but never the 7.3's... oh well, I'll ask around

Well seeing as just 10-15 years ago or so getting double digit gas milage in a large van was normal, 15 is pretty good. I think the old engines got 13 or so. So 15 may sound low, but put in comparison to older vehicles it replaced. You can't compare a 6L Van to a 3.8L Impala

My folks bought a Duramax for towing around their 5th wheel (they just retired). Loaded up, they get about 17 Mpg and it's not even broken in yet! I wouldn't be suprised if it'd get around 20 when all is said and done.
