we have this ghetto 94 mercury villager and its falling apart everywhere. manifold sheared its own bolts off and exhaust is leaking into the car. something is fatally wrong with the steering. electronics are failing. windshield washer sprayer sprays a jet hilariously into the air. the key doesnt even fit into the ignition anymore. its gonna cost nearly 2000 to fix it all up. so its time for a new car (to stand in till my dad buys a NEW car in a few years)

we can get about $3000 for the van apparantly. we want to spend about $15000. so about $18000 (cdn) in total. my dad wants something hatchback or larger, so we can haul ski equipment around, and stuff for his store. no massive van though, the villager is as large as he wants. so we dropped by several dealerships to see what they had to offer. ford had the windstar (too massive, expensive) and the cougar (coupe, not practical. horrible interior plastics). subaru had nothing really. outback is too long and expensive. mazda had nothing used. nissan had a 99.5 pathfinder for about $20,000. thats the one we're looking at now.

any suggestions for an suv/something in that price range? are dealerships the best place to buy a used car, or should we snoop around in the classifieds? is it not a little risky? we need this deal done NOW basically, cause we dont want to fix the van, and we dont want to get stuck with just one car...
