hmmm think the definition of sports car got fuxored somehow over time.

Cheap = yes miata is a fine example...I wouldn't pick it as my ride, but a great sports car.

Convert = yes....hardtop one = no ... not a sport car...you have now entered another level...GT perhaps.

4 seats = brainz assploded.

good in snow = brainz stuck to frozen pole.

I would do like I did with my dad and have him join some forums. We built a 408 cubic inch 1996 Eddie Bauer Bronco to pull a boat...he now wants more speed :)

THANK YOU.

Tell your Dad to compromise, because if he does get a car that somehow matches that criteria, it will probably suck. "A jack of all trades, master of none."

I wish. He also keeps whining about good gas mileage, but I will try to push this also. Arent they ~$50,000?

Dont come telling me thats not a sports car. I just dont want my dad to waste his money on a piece.

Ya, MIKEMIKE told me to suggest one of them.

I think all we really need to do is get off our asses and go test drive a bunch.

Except hes always out of town.

Will push for lotus and gt500 the most, see what happens.

Sports car that seats 4... that rules pretty much all sports cars out. RX-8 seems to fit, though. But that's not good on snow.

Why doesn't he go with something like a Subaru Impreza WRX STI if both performance and some mild practicality are important?

Thats kinda one of my favorite cars, believe me, I thought of that and the Lancer, but I like them to much to have my dad get one of them.

I'm asking for trouble here:

What about a Pontiac G6 hardtop convertible? $30k, hardtop, good in snow, seats four, sporty (though obviously not as sport oriented as a small, RWD roadster.)

Not asking for trouble. I guess my dad's perception of sports car is a little skewed, because he already looked at this.

Cant really remember what he thought of it though.

He goes back and forth to often. Before he called today for me to look at the VW, he had said he was getting a Prius.

BTW, what is everyone's opinion on the Saturn Sky? Saw one in the parking lot a week ago. I thought it looked pretty good.

according to edmunds, the sky isn't bad, but the engine and transmission leave a bit to be desired on the base model. if anything, i'd check out the redline version (260hp turbo'ed 2L)

Will have to give this a look, although I remember hearing they were backordered, and there was a 10 month wait or so.

Gonna go to sleep now, school tommorow. I will refer back to this thread when I need to.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help.

Get an M3 convertible.. no hardtop though.

The only car thats a 4 seater hard top convertible is a Mercedes SL550/600/65/55 and the twow back seats are cramped at best.

the eos is in no way sporty. unless you mean "sporty" like what a teenage girl wants. you know, like the beetle is "sporty." there are no cheap, fast convertible hardtops. the closest you'll come is the S2000 with the optional removable hardtop (you take it off and leave it in your garage).

Just FYI, The Sky requires an aftermarket 4 point roll bar setup if you ever want to take it to a track day.

Mazdaspeed3? Don't know if it's sporty enough but then again the definition of sports car here is neither clear nor conventional. 263 hp and 280 ft-lb isn't too bad for a light little car. =)

Well, I dont think ill let him get this car. Its ugly, and I would feel ashamed every time I saw it.

Will look at BMW's and 350Z and Eclipse. They all seem to be around the price range.

I just found a lotus near us on ebay. I dont think he will go for it, but ill call him and check it out.

You don't think you'll let him bet this car? WTF? do you have control over him and his checkbook? Maybe you mean you'll advise him against buying it? WTF is with the kiddie posters on ATOT, thinking they have some kind of say in how their parents spend their money? You're not the first one I've unloaded on, nor, most likely, will you be the last...

Anyway, Have him look at the BMW's. Nice sporty cars, well built, drive and handle very well, and IIRC, some even come with free maintenance. (that may have expired by now...I don't know for sure)
He can even get some great deals on CPO Bimmers as well, usually at a great savings over new.
