YACT: CV Boots?

I was told that they my Integra's CV boots might need to be replaced, and was wondering how necessary/expensive is it to do so?

Would it just be better in the long run to replace each side of the axle?
 
The boots themselves are fairly cheap, they might be labor intensive though, depends if they need to pull the axle to do it. IIRC someone made replacment boots that had a seam so you wouldn't have to pull the axle, but not sure how reliable that would be(Or if they even exist). If they have a hole in them its a good idea to replace them. Otherwise the joint will follow..
 
Replace them ASAP unless you want to replace the entire CV joint. When the boot tears, debris gets in there and the joints don't survive long afterwards.
 
CV boots cost maybe $15 each. They're little rubber boots. They wear out. Axles don't wear out nearly so quickly. You shouldn't NEED to replace your axles. Just replace the boots.
 
Yes, it's usually more economical in the long run to replace the entire half-shafts instead of just the boots. It's just marginally more labor and parts are probably ~$100 per shaft.

This is what I was told by my mechanic, as well.
 
In my old Camry my CV boots were gone... I could see the grease in the wheel well. I drove around for probably 50k miles before I had them replaced. Basically it clicked like a mofo every time I made a sharp, low speed turn (parking lots). The danger with having an unlubricated half shaft (Huhuh) is the bearings may seize under heat. If you want to save money you can probably wait until they're dry and start clicking 🙂

But the CV axle is very important in a FWD car. Basically it allows power to be applied to wheels even when you're turning.

for me, I ask them to change the entire shaft and be done with it.

$100 per axle (with boots of course) in LA area.
 
Split boots suck. But see, there is an upside to this. Autozone sells the reman'd axles for about $60 each. But, they have a lifetime warranty. So when the boot tears, free replacement and only needing my time to replace them. I'd call that a good setup. The only problem is that sometimes its hit or miss whether the axle you get is any good. They don't really rebuild them at all, just slap on a new boot and put grease it in, maybe paint it, and that's it.
