YACT: Cruise control with a manual transmission

  • Thread starter Thread starter
  • Start date Start date

Let's say I'm on the highway, traveling at 70mph and I am using cruise control. Let's also say that the person in front of me begins to slow down at a moderate pace.

If I still have cruise control on and I depress the clutch and downshift (for engine braking) or I shift into neutral, will my car redline since I'm not in gear?

The way I figure it, won't the car see that I'm slowing down and try to accelerate, but when I keep slowing down, won't it further accelerate all the way to redline, since I'm in neutral?

Or is there some sort of switch built in so that when the clutch is depressed, the cruise control shuts down?

2004 Accord, btw.

The cruise control will disengage.
I do this every single day of my life when I'm on the highway for work.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, I know the brake pedal switches cruise off, but I just didn't want to start screaming hysterically one day on the highway because my car is redlining and I'm in neutral. 🙂

Thanks!

I remember seeing old warnings telling you not to do this, because you'll blow up your engine.

Anything from 80s and on should disengage automatically.
