Tuneup should be under $100 IMHO. Fuel pump will probably be some bill since its a German car. Not sure if they have to drop the gas tank to do it though. If they do it'll be more expensive.

If I'm not mistaken most "tuneups" are simply replacing plugs/wires. You can do this yourself VERY inexpensively...

For newer cars yes. I'm guessing his '85 still has a carb under the hood.

I did a quick search on www.parts.com and saw the 85 Golf/GTI have the same pump but the vendors didn't stock it or have a price.

This was listed though: FUEL PUMP, Cabriolet 85-90 $205.62 retail, $154.22 your price. So I'd imagine the GTI would be similar...fuel pumps can probably be found at autozone type stores cheaper.

A tune up depends on how much is needed a full tune up if everything has been neglicted can be pricey. If it's just plugs, oil change, air filter, and many fuel filter under a $100.

is it just a simple tune up or a full servicing at your 200k mile mark or something? your filter's not going to be THAT much, but then there is labor, and depending on where it is.....

The fuel pump is about $195 on www.importecparts.com, and the pre-pump is $54. This is for a Golf/GL/GT.

Spark plugs are about $5.33, or $13 retail.

Go to your local library, photocopy the pages in the refrence text, and do the tuneup and fuel pump replacement yourself. Should save you on labor, but if you don't have the tools, it will probably even out.

unless you have to drop the fuel tank... even with the ground clearance on my truck, it wasn't something i wanted to try without a lift.

tune up = spark plugs/air filter/oil change. spark plugs and air filter VERY easy to do. Walmart does oil change for $12 including filter.

gas filter- do you feel hesitation when you press on the gas? if no, then you dont need a gas filter.

fuel pump- well, this i would take to a mechanic ;)

Yes, it can be a real PITA. Especially if your pump dies with a full tank. It is not fun dropping 15 gallons of gas in a tank.
