As some of you may or may not remember i am really wanting to get into Virginia Tech (Double Major in CE, and EE). I have talked to a few Engineers (Or rather my dad did) and i talked to a few of my friends and they said it was advisable to apply General Studies and then after that year, transfer into the Engineering school. Can anyone shed some light on this method?

Additionally, will there be any difference in schedule if i were to get accepted into the engineering school. In other words would the core classes i would be taking be any different?

When i apply early decision, should i indicated that i would be applying General Studies and then transfering?

For the recommendations. I have selected my teachers and friends, but would it be to my advantage to find someone who can right a recommendation based on my Engineering major as opposed to an English teacher?

Thanks a lot, the AT forums have been such a big help in College advice. I cant thank you guys enough,

-Kevin

When I applied for Computer Engineering at my college, I had to have some specific math and physics classes done with before I could apply. I believe I came to college as either undecided or under Letters and Science. It didn't make a difference in scheduling during my freshman and sophmore years.

It depends on your grades and how competitive the vtech is, if you're afraid that you won't get accepted to the major then apply to general studies then trasnfer. The classes from the first 2 quarters should not differ too much from an EE mjr., you're still taking the same core classes. The key is to do well, keep a high GPA and they'll accept you.

You should also check whether you can enroll in those classes. generally there should be no restrictions for lower division courses but just check to be sure.

they are telling you to try under General Studies because it will be easier to be accepted based on admission qoutas and such. They may only allow 500 people to be allowed for Engineering, but for General Studies thay may allow 1000. (you get my drift). Just apply for general studies, i wouldnt indicate that i wanted to transfer to engineering.

*looks around* big help huh?

depends. if you are worried you won't get into the school at all if you apply engineering, apply as general.

best way to nkow is ask someone in admissions or the engineering school. they will help you out, you just need to find out who to call

So no matter what, even if i get my engineering major, my freshman and softmore year are all the "boring" or core classes, most of which dont pertain to much to my major.

Lemme post my stats so far.

3.47GPA
1200 SAT
(2 AP's Junior Year, 5 AP's Senior Year)
National Honor Society
Baseball (Outside of school, didn't make team :-\)
Youth Group - Confirmation
Among recommendations, 2 are from former students

Based on you guys experience, is there a way i can meet with a rep from that college and ask him/her based on my stats, which way i should go?
