The Car: '92 Honda Civic LX 5-speed

The Situation: Went out to my car yesterday morning, pushed the clutch in like regular and started in neutral, but I was unable to select any gears. So I turned the car off, messed with the stick a little bit, and noticed that when the car was off, I could move through the gears fine, but when the car was on, it wouldnt let me. When I tried starting in 1st gear, the car immediately took off, even when I had the clutch pedal to the floor. I also noticed that the pedal stayed at the floor when i took my foot off. So basically now I've worked out a system of starting the car in gear to get it rolling, then i lift up on the clutch pedal with my foot, and somehow it works after that. What the hell is going on? My brother had a similar experience with this on his accord, and it turned out to be the clutch master cylinder. Any ideas?

your clutch and/or clutch cable is fvcked. Replace them.

Or, if you have a clutch master cylinder, then you have no clutch cable, and it's a hydraulic clutch. In that case, it's the clutch and/or clutch hydraulics.

Those cars should have a cable. Its most likely something in the clutch is bad.

Also, some civics have been known for the clutch pedal bracket to break. You
might pop your head under the dash and take a look.

Otherwise, take it to a shop and have it looked at.

The 92-00 civic used hydro clutch. It's most likely a leak in the master cylinder, or the slave cylinder, or in the lines. Also, as DD mentioned, check the bracket underneath and make sure it's not broken.

Checked the master cylinder, it was completely empty. Filled it up with brake fluid and its been working fine now. I'll just have to wait and see if it keeps leaking.

When my master cylinder went out i lost pressure to the clutch. Had to pump it up in order to get it to work. The day it got really bad was when i forgot to take it out of 1st to start the truck, The clutch was down so it started, but the clutch was actualy engaged, with the E brake on.

Burned the starter up, had to get the girlfriends dad to come out at 2am and help me push it off.

Sucks man.
