YACT: Check engine light on brand new Honda CR-V

I just posted this thread over at the CR-V forum but I thought that the all the car geeks on AT would have some valuable input as well. Thanks for any thoughts you might have!

Toyota doesn't really have a comparable SUV. The RAV4 is too small for me and the Highlander is too large/expensive. The CR-V fits nicely in between.

Sometimes if you don't tighten the gas cap, the light will come on. Happened to me once. Went into the dealer and made a big fuss.... turned out it was only the gas cap... apparently it came loose while driving.

What about a subaru forester or something like that. Cargo room, AWD, fast as hell
It's a nice vehicle, I test drove one. It's slightly smaller than the CR-V (but definitely larger than the RAV4), and it has a bit more cargo room. Unfortunately there's not as much room in the rear seats, and I would have taken that over the small increase in cargo room. The crash test ratings are very impressive, even more so than the CR-V. The CR-V EX I'm getting is AWD as well, and the Forester is no faster than the CR-V unless you spend a few extra grand on the turbo model. I'm not particularly interested in speed; the fastest I'll be driving on a regular basis is 75 MPH or so. I certainly wouldn't fault anyone for choosing a Forester, it just wasn't quite the right set of features for me.

But would a loose gas cap set off an oxygen sensor? (I'm pretty much clueless as far as the technical side of cars go, FYI.)

No, they're unrelated. I've heard of loose gas caps triggering a code though as well.

Honestly I'd not worry about this two much for two reasons: 1) You have a long, long warranty on this car. 2) Chances are the O2 sensor was just faulty from the factory. Now, if all they did was reset the code I can almost gaurantee that the code will go off again. My 00 maxima had a CeL go on right after buying it (I bought it with 37k on it and the light went off about 200 miles later). It was the O2 sensor. I reset the computer, but the light came back on a couple hundred miles later. SOMETIMES the code can go off on a good sensor and a reset will be good and the light won't trigger again, but really they should have replaced that O2 sensor. An O2 sensor is a very minor fix and they do fairly frequently die on cars. I would not worry about buying a car that had this happen (unfortunate it happened right away, but it can happen at any time). However, I would refuse to buy the car unless they assure you that they are putting in a NEW O2 sensor, not just resetting the computer. Tell them you are not interested in coming back in a week to have them fix it properly, and that they have to replace it now.

The part is approx $100 give or take depending on brand and dealer markup, etc. so they shouldn't fuss much about replacing it.

Realize that the O2 sensor is just an independent part of the vehicle. Unless the engine is in a seriously bad way (all but impossible for a new CRV) and burning a quart of oil every 50 miles, which is thusly fouling up the O2 sensor, the problem is only the O2 sensor and not the car itself. If the light was something serious like a loss of compression (I think a code can be thrown for that), then I'd definitely want a new one, but an O2 sensor is about the most innocuous light-triggering you'll ever see.

Don't buy that car. Get another.

Should got a 'yota.

The check engine light came on in my moms brand new highlander a while ago. It was just some "loose emission hose".
Should got a 'issan 😀

I told her to get a Maxima or slightly used TL, but she wanted the SUV

I have a Honda though 😛

Thanks for all the input folks, I have decided to get the green CR-V instead, assuming it's still available. I'm not too concerned since December is normally pretty slow for the dealerships.

plus the CRV has a picnic table in the back !!!!
I remember that I had to hear 3 clicks when closing the gaz cap or the engine light would come up ....
