YACT: changing spark plugs?

DaWhim

Lifer
how often do I have to change the spark plugs? is plantium better?

and one more question, does the ebrake suppose to lock up the wheel when I pull it? mine just slow down a little. I barely feel it is there.

1: I do mine every year or so, but I check the gap every couple months. The only purpose platinum serves is to keep the gap the same for longer...

2: Yes, it is. You need to adjust your e-brake.

Make/model/year?

i use iridium.. loved it... you can find it on ebay for cheap.. depending on what type of plug thats in there... plantium supposely can go up to 100,000k

Did using Iridium plugs make a difference on your car?

I change my plugs every 20K. My opinion is that going to iridium is a waste unless you have a monster engine with ignition upgrades, otherwsie, stick with stock or recommended aftermarket.

ebrake engages rear brakes with wire tension...its not locking the wheel.

Should still lock up the rear wheels if you pull it up as hard as you can. If the handle is reaching it's stop before you can't pull it any further because of the tension on the ebrake cable, then the cable has stretched and you need to adjust it.

Changed the plugs on my Focus at 60k...that's what it said in the maintenance book. I'm wishing I had done it earlier because my gas mileage went up 2mpg after the change.

well at a stop. but not enough to overcome the engine. its ussually jsut a wire pulling on the rear drum brakes.

OEM plugs work best 90% of the time.
They have performance plugs that are supposed to make a difference...most of it is marketing ploys... The key to a good plug is to make sure there aren't carbon deposits on them, and to make sure the spacing is correct so you get the optimal spark based on your car's specifications.

From personal experience, OEM NGK resistor plugs in my Honda made it run a hell of a lot better then the Bosch Platinums I had in there before. Same thing in my dad's Toyota truck. Unless I'm spraying or something I'm sticking to OEM from now on.

Remember to take a good look at the old plugs you're throwing out, they can tell you a lot about your engine.

NGK are the freaking bomb! I gotta find somebody that carries the NGK platinums that came installed by the factory, my local nissan dealer is charging $17.40 each, but I know I can get them for about $10 (104k miles on original plugs and still going strong (but it's probably time to replace them, was supposed to change them at 60))
