YACT: changing oil question

DaWhim

Lifer
I just realized there is a ring attached with the used oil filter I didn't put back in. 😱

anything big gonna happen?

some come with a gasket and some don't
maybe?

i forget, i haven't changed my own oil in a long time

if it isn't leaking out, you are ok. keep watching for it to leak

I bet it's just the gasket from the old filter. The new filter should've had a gasket attached to it.

that would be my guess as well.

just watch the car, if it starts leaking then freak out 😀

You did put a new filter in, correct?

Make sure you put some oil on your finger and run it around the new seal so you can remove the filter for your next oil change..

I had the old gasket stick to the car when I took the filter off, then there were two gaskets on there. (didn't notice)

Needless to say, I drove the car about 3 ft before turning it off. Oil was pouring out of the bottom.

looks more like the copper washer around his oil pan drain plug instead of a gasket.

Yeah, I was gonna say, that looks more like the crush washer that I never replace even though the manuals recommend it. 🙂

Don't listen to these people. They want to see something bad happen to you. You need to get help soon.

What can happen in this situation is that air can seep into your oil pan without the gasket. If that happens and the air works it's way to the engine it will expand very quickly and crack the engine block or cylinder head. What you need to do is take it to a mechanic and have them bleed the headers and reset the compression. To be on the safe side I would drive in reverse there or get a tow. The reason that I say reverse is because in reverse the cam shaft spins backward thus relieving the presure on the block. It also causes the oil to run backward thru the filter which lessens the chance of air getting in.

Good Luck and keep us updated.

Make sure you get the blinker fluid flushed too..

the one new one is fine, if you double gasket thats asking for trouble. It will be clear if there isn't one or if there are 2.
