How bad is it to spool a car up to its redline. What about 5k or 6k ? Is it just theoretically bad.... or is it a situation where if you do that 50 times, the car doesnt work any more?

And is 5k or 6k bad?

I dont think I've ever gone higher than 6k... even then its pulling hard, and I cant imagine what 8k would be like...

Edit: Redline is 7k, tach stops at 8k.

i've redlined at 7k in my old ass mitsubishi lancer '91 (when i had it).

obviously bad for prolonged periods of time, but in the short run it cleans out the carbon from the exhaust and actually helps your engine. from what i've heard that is.

It wastes gas when you don't need all the acceleration possible, and it accelerates the process of normal engine wear (also of the belts and belt-driven accessories). But theoretically, running up to the redline will not cause damage.

Is it a race car?

No? Don't redline.
Yes? Redline as often as possible.
Dual-duty? Get a dedicated racecar, punk.

LOL. Don't forget the race track either. 😉

What do you drive? I think as long as you know how to take care of your car and drive it according to what it was meant to do .... you shouldn't have many problems. For example, my Camaro redlines at 5000 or 5500, but I rarely ever rev higher than 4000-4500 because I get craploads of power from 1500-3500 anyway. But when I drive my Lancer, I go all the way up to the redline .. it's effortless but it's required if I want to really move.

<--- cant wait till EVO is available in canada

It accelerates wear, but you can still do it when you want to, as long as it's not every time you're at the lights. I semi-frequently redline the sentra (though it has no tachometer), because I need the power, but the maxima rarely sees it, since it does well without it. Last time I redlined it was in 1st and 2nd yesterday, but before that it was probably a couple of months.

As long as your car is well maintained it shouldn't have any trouble if you occasionally run it up to redline. If it is a late model car it probably has a rev limiter that will prevent you from doing any major damage by over reving it. Make sure you take good car of the car and don't run it up to redline until the engine is up to normal operating temperature. Also, the more you drive like this the harder it is on the rest of the drivetrain (transmission, clutch, etc.). I would expect those components to wear out faster if you drive like that all the time or even frequently.

Wtf? You Sentra is a manual and has no tach?

I don't mind redling mine at all. I typically spool it up to maybe 7200 or so through 2 gears (puts me at about 60-65) when I get on the freeway. My fuel cutoff is 7800 and the stock valvetrain/bottom end is good until at least 8k so I'm not worried about it🙂

My topaz has seen 4k everytime I've driven it, and it sees 5k every couple of days minimum. Official redline is 5500, and the valves start floating just over 6000. I bought it at 111k, and it's got 127k 1.5 years later. Not bad for a domestic car made nearly 13 years ago 😉

theres no clear answer..but alot of ppl do give ignorant conjectures (not necessarily here...on this topic...yet 😀)

if your car is capable of operating at that range, then its healthy and ok to do it... just obviously as long as you're not doing it very frequently and for long periods of time.

its like weight lifting... its better to have a workout then slob around constantly... but if youre pushing max weight every other day you are going to strain your body.

i find myself redlining once per trip i make... i find it alot nicer to stick it in 3rd and pass somebody on the freeway than put around at 2k

You mean to say that my comment wasn't ignorant? DAMMIT.

i bring mine to 5k-6k many times - there's no problem if you dont abuse the redline.

drive it like you stole it...😀

In my Camaro i use a rev limiting tach

it is set for aprox 5,000 rpm,
sometimes i will be in 2nd gear and not shift fast enough and hear the rev limiter
kick in,and will be thinking, DOH!

Better than blowing apart the 427 big block! 😉

Well, my car is auto, and it has a rev limiter, but I was curious anyways..

Use it when you need it man.

Like when dumbasses driving in the merge lane decied to slow way down to let you on the freeway while there's nobody behind them :|.
