YACT: Car theft rates of garaged cars

hope i'm not crossing any boundaries by posting this, but i'm just wondering what the rate of theft is for cars that are garaged.

or in other words, what percentage of stolen cars were out of a secured garage? ...and how can i prevent this.

i'm looking to move into a big city next year and having a car that's been on the top 5 most stolen car list has me very paranoid. i've already layered my car security: autolock, high-end 2 way alarm with backups, been garaged in a relatively safe neighborhood, car is bone stock

of course, there was that thread about the yellow Type-R that was lifted right up over some guy's fence and stripped just like that. scary.

sounds like you are paranoid enough

yeah, but you know he's gonna end up being the one guy who gets his car stolen after taking every precaution.

LOL, that would be hilarious.

I know a lot of people personally who drive Civic, Accord, Integra, all of which are on the top 10 most stolen cars list, and yet they all have their cars after all these years. They park it on the streets too.

i think it's what's under the hood that theives are after. a plain old accord dx or civic dx or base integra doesn't have much to offer.

OTOH, integra type-R or GS-R or civic si (ask CTrain) engines are highly valued on the black market and can turn that plain old civic into a very quick car. people have said that it took less than 6 hours for theives to jack the car and completely strip it for parts before dumping the shell.

i'm still trying to find that thread about the yellow type-R.

yea they go for high demand parts. integra probably a nice target. if parking at a community college or such tempting targets make sure to use a club or something.

those are the #1 stolen car ever ... a guy here in town has had his yellow ITR stolen more than once. luckily with his GPS it's always recovered in time before it's stripped.

Those cars are the most stolen largely because they're the most common. There are so many of them on the road that it is easy to sell the parts off of a stolen vehicle. In any case, it sounds as though you're taking every precaution, so don't worry about it. If they really want your car, they'll get it. Period. The most you can do is make your car less attractive compared to the next guy's car, and you've already done that. No sense worrying about it beyond that.

If it's in a garage, wouldn't they be harder to steal in the first place, since they're not visible?

unless it's not REALLY a garage...

that's the idea.

but i was actually wondering HOW thieves break into garages to get your car. i've been seeing a lot of threads on honda-tech about garage break-ins. maybe that forum gets more than its share of theft threads, but it makes you think...

WTF, you are paranoid.
If I was breaking into a gargage, I might break as well break into a garage with a Ferrari, not some garage with an Integra. Same offense, bigger fish.

i always heard that integras/civics/accords/etc were a piece of cake to steal. could you say the same about a ferrari? also, i'm guessing the black market for japanese imports is a lot bigger that it is for a fine italian car. the ferrari is worth a lot more in one piece, which isn't the name of the game for import thieves.

Well I'd guess off the top of my head someone with a Ferrari is gonna have h3lla lot more/more sophisticate security than someone with an Integra.
