YACT: car terminology

I often check out "tuned" "euro" (I live in Europe😉) cars, and sometimes see the reference of stages, usually Stage 1, but I was reading TheCarLounge Forums, and was reading about this car being Stage 6.

How many stages are there, and what are they?

AFAIK, there aren't really any specific stages..it's whatever someone wants to label it. From what I've seen, stage 1 may be a non-intercooled turbocharger setup - stage 2 would be intercooled turbo, slightly higher boost..stage three would have higher boost, possibly larger turbo & water injection or something..

A lot of companies have "Stages" of upgrades. Usually each stage can be sequentially achieved by adding additional components to the previous stage, or you can just start at a higher "stage" by spending more money initially. There's no standard for what each "stage" entails, it's on a tuner by tuner basis.

EDIT: For example:

Stage 1: Exhaust manifold, wastegate, BOV, turbo, downpipe, cats, intake, fuel pump, engine management

Stage 2: Add head gasket, boost controller, FMIC, larger fuel injectors

Stage 3: Enlarged turbo, larger injectors

You can start at any stage, just have to spend more money.
