YACT: Car seems to slip into neutral constantly...

My girlfriend's '98 Mazda Protege SE has been acting up lately. We'll be driving along when all of a sudden the overdrive light starts flashing and the car seems to slip into neutral. She loses all acceleration and is forced to pull over, put the car in park, and then in drive again. This happens constantly. I told her to turn overdrive off and it helped a little, but kicked us out of gear again just now.

Any of you car gurus have any idea what this issue could be? Bare in mind, I know fvck all about cars...

this is just a guess, and totall guess, bad computer chip

edit: on my 95 altima when i braked hard and lock the wheels it would start going from 2 gear and it was dianosed as bad computer chip. So it could be simmilar except it puts the car in nuteral

If the O/D light flashes, there is a fault detected in the transmission. Get it looked at NOW. DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR. If you drive the car, you will damage the transmission further and reduce the possibility that you can repair it. Chances are that it's dead anyway. You will probably need a new transmission.

Oh, I should add then when she brought it to the dealer they couldn't find anything wrong with it. The mechanic had the car for three days and it didn't screw up on him once!

net time it happens see she can notice if she did anything such as break hard or acceelererate hard, right before the problem occures

It should be storing some sort of code.

I would not drive the car in this condition. Automatic transmissions are fairly fragile things unless they are operating completely properly and it is possible to damage the transmission by continuing to drive the car even if the fault is electrical.
