YACT: Car Makes weird noise near wheels when making sharp turns.

1991 Chevrolet Cavalier, manual


Everytime I turn the wheel far there is a high pitched noise emminating from near the tires. Steering is also a bit harder than normal (I thought maybe the front tires were really low)


Any ideas?

Possibly.... I know its not belt action (which is normally assotiation with power steering making noises)

Hmmm. Hard to steer? Doesn't sound like CV joint to me. I'm not sure I know what to suggest. CV joints click when they're worn out. High pitched sounds are either brakes or wheel bearings. If it were wheel bearings the sound would probably be present all the time. Again, I don't think either of those would make the steering effort increase.

How many miles are on the car?

I'm guessing cv joints, tierod ends, or axles(depending on mileage)

Check for loose splash shields in your front wheel wells. Other than that it could be a dried out tie rod end or ball joint.

75k miles...

thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to take a closer look later. I was driving to work when I noticed this.

Like he said......start with the simplest things first and check your power steering fluid. If it checks out OK, then progress through the suspension components until you find it. And you did check your air pressure in your tires, right?

almost positive its not the axle, not with only 75,000 miles.

Turn the wheel sharply while standing still.

Is it kind of a groaning sound? My parents had an 87 Aerostar that ate power steering pumps for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They always made a groaning sound when turning, especially at lower speeds where the steering needs more assist.
