YACT: car keys get stuck in ignition

this happens to me just about 75% of the time now. When i turn off my engine the keys just gets stuck. I know it isn't because i'm not on park or the wheel is locked or anything like that. Any other suggestions? One thing that i've noticed is: When my keys are stuck i can't shift gears, its locked somehow. what can it be? Please don't reply with "make sure you're on park, or your steering wheel is locked"

is there a button you can push that releases the key? my mom's old van had one. it was under the steering wheel on the column thing.

Same problem I had a month ago. I used the graphite, and now I'm pretty much free of my keys getting stuck. I'm pretty sure you're getting the same problem, and this will fix it.

Found my tube of graphite for $1.50 or so at Wal-Mart.

it's a honda isn't it. 🙂

there's a solenoid relay that gets frozen in the wintertime because the grease inside the relay binds up the contacts. basically the car thinks you're in drive and isn't letting you take the key out because of it.

graphite lube, good idea, i think i'll try it on my old camry 89 that has that problem. key won't turn without jiggles sometimes. very very annoying. imagine if you had to flee from an attacker! oh noes! :Q

Car related but off topic to this, but in a Honda Accord LX, the front wheels do the braking, right? Is that same for the e-brake?

all four wheels brake in ALL cars. parking brake is in the rear

my friends old 89 accord does this as well. after he turns off the car, he tries pulling the keys out and they wont come out. after about a minute or so of trying to pull it out, it eventually comes out.

Pepsi90919, do you know how to fix this?

Uhh in a Honda Accord LX all 4 wheels do the braking when you push the pedal...much like most cars =p

The ebrake only uses the rear 2 brakes though.

try google, i remember reading a procedure that involved replacing the dried grease in the relay.

or you can just wait it out every time you put it in park and use the shift-interlock defeat (the key slot right by the shifter) if you need to go out of gear. 🙂

By the way I think this key getting stuck thing has happened to me too, although most of the time it was just me forgetting about park there was one time where it just got stock...

I think I jiggled the transmission switch a bit and turned the key back the other way and then back off and it was OK. This is a camry fwiw. I think this probably happens in a lot of cars with the transmission lockdown.

If you think that's bad for getting away from bad guys...my stupid alarm's engine cut won't turn off unless I take the key OUT, then disable the alarm, THEN put it back in...so you can't just turn the car off then back on!

You sure its the rear two? I thought it was only one wheel.

i thought the brake pedal was just a spring and the effect of stopping was only placebo.

Actually, it lets out a giant foot underneath the car, first invented by Fred Flintstone.

heh all 4.

its a common misconception, and why many suv owners think their 4 wheel drive vehicles can stop faster and have better grip on turns....and get into accidents. all cars have 4 wheel brake.

heh although I'm sure the sarcastic replies thus far have hinted that it couldn't just be one wheel, I'll just point out that if you think about it, braking only one wheel while the other wheels are still moving would be very very bad for actually keeping the car in a straight line...

sorry for the late reply and thanks a lot Actaeon i'll give that like a try. Yea a honda, sorta, 95 integra special edition.

sorry, i should have been more clear, i can't pull the key out of the ignition. I can turn on the engine fine, and turn it off, i just can't pull it out.

exactly. there's a solenoid that's preventing you from turning it back.
