YACT: can I get a decent paint job for $1k?

I got a older model integra, the paint is wear off. It looks pretty bad, wearing off on the hood, and top part of the car. Possible to get a decent paint job for under $1k? Preferably a whole new color.
Any good body shops around So Cal? Orange County?

I don't want some cheap maaco paint job though.

Not a chance, unless you know someone in the business that will do it for just the cost of materials. Paint, depending on color (yes, some are more expensive than others) will alone run 700-1000, including prep and clear-coat. Also, if you'd want to adhere to OEM standards (based on Acura reccomendations), it usually is more.

If you go to a small painting shop like Maaco or a local one you can get it done.

Personally, I don't like the paint job on my car. I'd honestly be happier with the stock paint, but whatever

If you want a nice job, prep it yourself to cut costs a little.

You can get it done for cheaper at maco, but it won't be a particularly good job. It will look OK at first, but they use subpar paint and prep techniques, so it will not last.

The prep is the issue.

If you prep yourself, remove all glass and trim and mask everything and give a proper sanding, you'll get a much nice Maaco job. Especially if you colorsand between the stages for them.

Then again, if you're doing that, you might as well rent a sprayer and a booth and do it all yourself.

$700-$1000 for paint primer and clear? That's insane. I got enough House of Kolor Red Pearl for my whole car for about $300. That includes primer, clear, reducer, and hardener.

Any good body shop should be able to do it for less then $1000. (If you repaint it the original color.)
If you change colors that will cost more since the will have to paint around the door jams, under the hood, trunk, etc.

i kinda want to paint it another color. It is a faded dark green color right now.

That's much more $$$$ to be done right. Your best bet is to repaint to the factory color.

How long you keeping the car? Just keep changing the oil and drive it until it turns into dust!

i guess i'll have to take your advice. sounds like a new paint job will cost me wayyy too much.

maybe its time to give the guys from "Pimy My Ride" a call. 🙂

I wouldn't let those goons touch my car with a ten foot pole.

Those dudes on Overhaulin' are pretty good though 😀rool;

I should see if I can't get somthing together for them to take the Marquis, surely they'd like to make a pimpwagon.

Here's what you could do:

Sand car down with 280 grit.
Spray car with auto primer.
Sand car down with 400 grit.

Take it to Maaco for some cheap $300 paintjob.

When you get it, buff the orange peel out with 2000grit and rubbing compound... you may want to use a rotary buffer for this.

That's pretty much the only way you're going to get a decent paintjob for cheap.

My wife had my second car repainted as an anniversary gift. She said it was about $400. There are a couple of spots where they screwed up, but you have to be looking for it to see it. It was well worth the money IMO. The car looks soooo much better than it did. The paint itself looks factory quality, but I'm not an expert. As for longevity, we'll see...it's been a year and a half and still looks as good as the day it was painted (except the spot where the kids dumped concrete mix on it and tried to wipe it off).

Impossible. Bodywork is an art. If you do all the prep work yourself it'll look like $hit because you're inexperienced and don't know how to do it right. If you pay someone else to do it it'll look like $hit because it isn't worth the labor to do it right. Just drive it for another year or two and save up for the car you want.
