Sidewall can be repaired, but since any damage compromise the integrity of the tire, most tire shops will not do them

Original tires. Car has 17,800 miles on it now.
That's about 50% worn if you have sporting tires, maybe 25% worn if you have standard all-season tires. Check the remaining tread on the tires, if it's much different from the tread depth of a new tire, you'll want to at least change both tires on that axle.

$220 a tire 🙁
What kind of tires, what car, and what size?

I called around a few places and all but the dealer quoted me $220 per tire (or about that). The dealer had one tire, brand Falcon, that was only $120. Since I had never heard of it, I just went to Costco and bought the Michelan for $230 installed with tax. Now I've got the green caps.

$115 from Tire Rack for the OE. It's not a particularly great tire and doesn't carry great ratings (OE tires rarely do). You probably could have talked the place down in price.

it's good info for the future. take your tire rack quote to discount tire, they tend to match the price.
