This is just screaming RUN THE FVCK AWAY!!

Yep.

The car is NOT registered in the name of the person who currently owns it.

So therefore if you hand him over money and he hands you the keys, you DO NOT OWN THE CAR. Because he doesn't have the title and the title doesn't list his name as the owner.

Run the fsck away, it's not worth the hassle and you could lose $$$

and worst of all.. it's automatic :Q
why make an automatic Z?
so stupid :p

I  automatic transmission.

Yes ladies and gentleman I am not a man yet, I have no clue how to drive a manual.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you don't have the title unless its paid in full right? I owe 12k on my Rodeo and my gf owes 2k on her Maxima, neither of us have the car title...

We can still sell our cars, of course...

You get the title (unless it's a lease). There just happens to be a lien on the title in the name of the finance company that isn't released until the loan is paid.

no you dont. IF you get a loan the bank gets the title until its paid off.

But youc an sale the car just need to notify the bank.

Then why did I just get the title to the car I bought in Dec.?

Guess it depends on the state. I know in Indiana, the state keeps the title until the car is paid off.

heh i guess it does depend on the state.

I just know in IL we dont get the title until the car is paid off. either way it dont really matter. the lein holder gets paid first.

You should be hoping for a sharp knife instead!

Make that a sausage with chili, cheese, onions and a can of Altoids and you got yourself a deal.

You can purchase the car without a title, but you'll never be able to register the car without a title.
Same goes for boats and any other motor vehicle (at least in NY)

I found that out when I purchased a boat. I received the title for the trailer the boat was on, but the owner didn't realize he needed the title for the boat itself (it was just a little john boat with a 9.9 hp motor). It was no problem to take care of it at the DMV... they had the forms and it only took him a few minutes.

Eh, my dad has an '85 Ford Tempo he leased waaaay back in the day. It was through a small company who's owner was friend of my grandpa's.

Problem was, the guy said my dad pays 4 more payments and the car is his. The guy didn't want it anymore, so it was fair. My dad paid...and the guy's wife died. The guy has since disapeared off the planet and no one knows where he went. The company is gone, all employees fired, and its general consensus he went insane.

So...my dad has a car that he doesn't own, doesn't lease, and can't get rid of. So I can see how that guy COULD be legit...but... you'd have the same problem as him for a lot of things.

I called the guy and he says that when he bought the car, the guy never wrote the title over to him and now he cant get ahold of the guy.... Hes in maryland and to get a new title, the old registrant has to file the paperwork. Ill call up my DMV and ask about the situation
Running away would not even be sufficient. I'd find a friend a rocket car and point it away from this car-sale and blast the engines.

It's not just shady - it's almost definitely illegal. That this guy - clown - would try and sell a car without a title is beyond me. If he actually bought the car without the title like he claims, then he's even stupider.

Is he supplying the VIN?

would a police under certain circumstances ask for a title for the car?
what if you could not provide it?

Like others are saying, STAY THE %$^$# AWAY.

I learned that lesson the hard way, sat 4 months with an unsuable, car because the title wasnt assigned properly. Eventualy had to get a title bond, and spend lots of extra money and time to get it useable.

BEWARE THE ASSHAT THAT TRIES TO SELL YOU A VEHICLE WITHOUT A TITLE!!!!!!!!

I check athemmings.comand could not find anything.
Maybe you can. For sure, if you pick up a copy at B&N, you will be able to title any car
WOP for a small fee without paying past due fees. The title must have no liens against it.
My buddy registered an old Packard this way. I don't have a copy here or I could add more.
By mail he registered it in Alabama? I think and they sent him the pink in Calif.

Look for the adds on titling a vehicle.

Note: Most liens are only good for 7 years or less, usually less :)

According to michigan DMV,
i could either get a court order saying that the car is mine, pay some kind of insurance fee (2x the cars value for 3 uears) or have police inspection that would eventually result in the car being mine. Either way it would be a lotta mess.

Im trying to talk to the guy right now to give me the info the previous owner and/or have him get the title the hard way.
