YACT: Burnt clutch

Everyone said it would happen eventually, i didnt believe them. I only had the car 6 months. 2001 Toyota Camry CE 5-speed. Was driving last night in traffic, not particularly aggressive but I guess enough to get the clutch stuck. It was slipping, and burning up. Got it to my friends, not good, tried to get it to mechanic and smoke was billowing out. Block away from my house and couldnt get it into 1st gear. So... how much am I looking at? Probably $150 - $200 parts and 300-400 labor?

You must have been driving pretty damn hard, I have a 91 Accord with 173k miles and the origional clutch and I drive pretty hard on it and haven't had any issues...

It's not really so much about how aggressive you're driving, but how well you know to operate a manual clutch. Sounds like you just ride the clutch/let it slip excessively.

I recently replaced my clutch with a hi-perf. ZOOMII.I would go with a hi-performance clutch, like a Zoom2, or centerforce.this will make your car fun to drive.its a must-Something with not to firm a pedal feel(like zoom 2).Zoom 2 comes witha new pilot bushing(do not forget to replace that) when changing clutches.The kit also has your throwout bearing alignment tool.Make sure your mechanic resurfaces your flywheel.Nows the time to replace that burnt clutch/brake fluid anyhow. The hydraulic fluid needs to be changed/flushed once every few years, but most people dont bother.You will also need a new clutch master cylander and slave, because the added pressure in the hydraulic system will blow out youre old cylanders.Bite the bullet on this one and youll be glad you did.I would budget a thousand dollars, and youll probably walk away with a couple hundred change, maybe.If you just wanna do the cheapest clutch job w/ the aftermarket clutch at autozone, and forget the master/slave (till it blows a week later), then you could probably do it for at around 275.00 to 375.00.thats probably not including cost of the aftermarket clutch.

A 2001 camry should not need a new clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder with a stock clutch job. Then again, a 2001 camry really shouldn't be due for a new clutch either

Why would you put a high performance clutch in a 4 cylinder Camry? All you're going to do is impact your drivability..

A honda with 173,000 miles AND you drive aggressively and you have the original clutch? Thats a stretch man! As a matter of fact, let me say SHENS!- you must be driving on the bare metal for about for about at least 25,000 miles. Anyway, if for some reason youre clutch has lasted this long?... replace it. NOW!

Um, does that not make sense to anyone else? Whether it's fried or not, you should be able to put it in whatever gear you want.

I welcome ANYBODY to come take a look at it, take it to a mechanic, etc.

It drives just fine, smooth shifts, etc. As someone said earlier, maybe it's about how well you operate the clutch?

001 camry should not need a new clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder with a stock clutch job. Then again, a 2001 camry really shouldn't be due for a new clutch either

Why would you put a high performance clutch in a 4 cylinder Camry? All you're going to do #1) a nice clutch like the zoom 2 is the difference between a boring car , and one thats fun to drive.It wont affect drivability-on mine i dont even notice the slightly firmer pedal feel While youre at it slap some Bilstiens on thier and youll really have a "new " car! #2) yea, i forgot it was a 2001-You shouldnt need a new clutch master/slave. Im guessing you werent the first owner? thats a short time for the clutch to last..on a camry- a VERY short time! #3) I agree, youre clutch should go into gear even if it doesnt move. Its looking like a Master/Slave cylander to me. Thats what happened with mine a week after i replaced my new clutch on my old toyota. It would not go into first- it was a bad Clutch Master/slave. A about two hundred fifty to fix, cause i couldnt get it into my regular mechanic.

I will be over next tuesday, with a professional ASE certified mechanic.I have instructed him to take apart your clutch to see if it is original toyota and to try to determine if its the original one that came stock on your vehicle. AFAIK, my brother's (now my mom's/my beater) 90 accord only had the clutch replaced once and that was only a couple years ago (car has over 212k miles). This goes for rotors too...people just don't know how to drive.

You're looking at around $700 total for the clutch replacement.

My 92 Mercury Topaz V6 5sp had 131k on the original clutch when the TOB died, and there was still some friction material left.

save you a few bucks and go to www.eclutchmaster.com and buy your clutch there I have bouht 3 so far and saved a ton! If your any good at cars I'd do it myself. the compelte clutch kit for your car is $130-$138 there and they take paypal even heh.

so i guess if i cannot get it into gear im looking at getting a master cylinder also. wow, this sucks. the clutch is definitely burnt up though, the pedal had no give on it and smoke was coming out and i definitely couldnt put it into first gear. i gotta get it to the mechanic today no money for tow either and my friend who has a truck that can pull it up the street is an ultimate slacker.

my 95 civic has 200k and factory clutch, infact everything on it down the the alternator is factory ... It has had the plugs and filters changed reguarly .... Ohh and a battery but thats about it.
