i'm thinking throttle position sensor..but thought i would get some more advice before i go buy one :)

just like the title says...it is idling high sometimes...earlier tonite i got off of the interstate and it was idling at 3K...after i parked the car and let it sit for 20-30 minutes, then drove it for a minute it was back to idling at about 800-1K again...this car has been sitting for about a year or so...its a 95 regal custom with the 3.8 V6...i already changed the belt, and changed the oil...going to do a tranny flush, radiator flush, and change plugs and wires tomorrow...anything else i should do since its been sitting for that long?

thx

Well, if you fired it up after a year without performing the proper startup procedure for an engine sitting so long, you've got bigger problems.

post back after you perform a proper tune up

edit: also if you think its the TPS then unplug it. if nothing happens it may very well be it. look for a cheap one on ebay

The injectors from sitting around my be dry or not shutting all the way right away allowing more fuel to seep through after you take your foot off.

I would use dura lube fuel injuector cleaner that can be had at walmart in the combo pack. It is all I have ever used and it does work.

If it was your tps you would shoot a code and the throttle would be erratic because the comp doesnt know where the throttle is to let the injectors put the right ammout of fuel out. It my even do what the old quadrajunk carbs did when you open the secondaries and would be a delay. But since you said it has been sitting some of the cleaner and driving it may take care of it plus again no check engine light as well. And also use good fuel.

Another thing to think about later because it has been sittng is rust build up in the tank from moisture in it over the year. Not saying this will happen but if your ever driving the car and you floor it and it starts to want to die out and when you let off the gas and go back on it your filter may have gotten clogged. This may or may not happen depending on your climate over the year.

But do the cleaner first. Dont skimp on the cleaner either. I have tried them all on the market between chevron to greased lightning and duralube one fixed the sticking throttle on my old ford f250 within half a tank. Also I have always used the dura lube in my oil and have seen it work. My old 78 Trans am used to run around 220 on the temp gauge and after doing a oil change and adding the dura lube my temp went down to 190 and all I did was that to it.

But as always you can lead a horse to water but you cant force it to drink I just hope you take my suggestions into consideration and try them.

And if the cleaner doesnt work then the injectors will need to be replaced. As for my experance. Step father was a mechanic and I helped him work on cars at the age of 8. I have personally owned over 300 cars since the age of 15, took a auto mechanics class every year in high school, I got a degree in auto mechanics from the Wilco Carrer center in Lockport IL, managed my fathers used car lot and car repair shop till he died, was a mechanic for Monkey wards and sears, was a service manager for Ford, Dodge, and Chevy, and am no longer doing any of it because of my disability.

thx for the advice...i didnt get a chance to put the tps on yet, but it did throw a code...and the check engine light came on when it started idling erraticly...i'll pick up the injector cleaner tomorrow though, and run that through...anything else i should be doing to this engine?

Well for next time you ask for help all the info especially if it is throwing a code for the part would be greatly appreciated. Since you didnt mention it I thought you were reaching out your arss and guessing and that sometimes doesnt always work or is the best way to go about things. As for anything else then no but if it is throwing the code go ahead and install it because its going to need it. and I woul ddo that before doing the cleaner.

Most likely the TPS. Post back after you've changed it and given the computer time to adjust to it.
