YACT: Broken shock

Look like the mounting point on the car is broken, or the nut/bolt broke.

You may have to raise the car to put it back on (unload the suspension).
 
Wow, a shock! I didn't think they were used on cars these days! Try lifting the car by the frame (if it has a frame), and the wheel should hang down to where you can attach it. Uh, it's not the shock that's to blame, it's the mount you should be bitching about. How was that held in place?
 
The shock is not broken, it has come losse from the car. Looks like the washer came off and then the shock slipped off. See that stud with a bolt there, that is where the shock it supposed to be. Take bolt off, install shoick and put on a washer then rebolt it back on.
 
According to the manufacturer, they include a washer that is supposed to keep the shock from slipping off the sleeve. As you can see, the shock just slipped through the little hole in the end of the shock. So, back to the manufacturer, I spoke to a nice guy named Dieter. He says that this has been a very widespread problem.

They include the washer in the kit but they put it on top of the shock because they don't want it to get lost or to clang around in the box during shipping. They are discovering that most DIYers put the washer on top, where it is shipped, instead of on the bottom where it is designed to prevent exactly what you see in this pic.

I swear there were no instructions to this install, which I look for when I work on my car. So, Dieter and I had a nice chat, he agreed to put in a new bushing and sleeve if I wanted to ship him the part. I don't have time for that. I engineered a long bolt and washer to force the sleeve back into the shock and then remounted it with the biggest washer i could purchase from the local hardware store.

Fixed!!

I still don't understand what holds it on, washer or no washer. Is it a huge cotter pin, snap ring, nut, or what?

It's a washer between the bolt and the shock. That keeps the shock from sliding off the sleeve and over the bolt. The hole in the base of the shock is big enough for the shock to simply slip off without a washer. The sleeve is machine pressed into the bushing at the factory. It was a bit of a struggle to get the sleeve into the bushing again, but it seemed to work ok.

Also, Dieter, at the factory said he'll put new bushings and sleeves in at no charge anytime. There is a lifetime warranty on Bilstein shocks and they will even rebuild them at less than replacement cost. Good company!!
 
If I understand correctly, it didn't 'break off', the shock slipped off the bolt, because the head of the bolt is the same diameter as the rubber bushing's ID. The metal bushing was left behind on the bolt.
