If you don't plan on keeping the car for a long while you may want to go with the semi-metal pads to save a few bucks.
The rotors are the metal discs that the brakes clamp onto to stop the car. If your pads were totally gone when the rotors are probably damaged. Most new rotors are throw away items and resurfacing them is a waste of time.
Why are so many of you suggested the guy do it himself? He doesn't even know what a rotor is, or mabey all of you didn't read that?
On top of that most people don't feel like going through the time and effort to pay for the parts and the headache of doing the work themselves. Personally I know I can replace brakes, but I really just don't feel like it and my time is worth too much to burn on replacing brake pads to save myself a whopping $100.
