YACT - Brakes are shot

That is a very reasonable price.
If you don't plan on keeping the car for a long while you may want to go with the semi-metal pads to save a few bucks.

The rotors are the metal discs that the brakes clamp onto to stop the car. If your pads were totally gone when the rotors are probably damaged. Most new rotors are throw away items and resurfacing them is a waste of time.

Why are so many of you suggested the guy do it himself? He doesn't even know what a rotor is, or mabey all of you didn't read that?
On top of that most people don't feel like going through the time and effort to pay for the parts and the headache of doing the work themselves. Personally I know I can replace brakes, but I really just don't feel like it and my time is worth too much to burn on replacing brake pads to save myself a whopping $100.

That was a Porche 911.

he also did it in a Volvo.
 
probably best not to go back to a shop that suggests ceramic pads for old non sportscar.
and yes waiting to replace pads long after they give warning screeches cost u big time. normally u'd just pay for pads, not rotor.

Semi-metalic pads will wear the rotors more than ceramic pads and the ceramic pads will last longer and be quieter, but both stop about the same. The ceramic pads for my last car (Lincoln Mark VIII) were less expensive than the comparable metallic pads.

i was going to type just about the exact same thing, but you took care of it for me. i wouldn't bother with the ceramic pads. go with the semi-metallic ones. price sounds about right, although you could change them yourself in an hour if you knew what you were doing. brakes would NOT be my first attempt at self car repair though. you're not being had.
