YACT: Brake pad change

Last night I changed out my brake pads and forgot to take the cap off of the brake fluid res. I think it forced some fluid out of the res. because I could smell brake fluid. I made sure the cap was secured afterwards but could it cause problems (ie. more air in the fluid).

you usually check that after you do a break job

I have done quite a few brake jobs and I never remove the brake fluid cap.

Typically, the only time you have to worry about air is if you open one of the lines at the wheels or if the reservoir is drained by some manner. As long as fluid remains in the reservoir you should not have to worry.

Apparently you are supposed to remove the cap because when you force the caliper back it forces the fluid back into the res.. Taking the cap off helps relieve pressure.

It sounds like a good idea, but unless you are pusing the caliper back in very quickly (which isn't a good idea), you shouldn't have to take the cap off.

never heard of that, not that i am a "Car guy", but i have changed my pads/rotors a few times and never did that

I never saw a mechanic in the shops I worked in not take them off. No reason not to.
