YACT: BEST BRAKE PADS

Hey all,

I recently (1.5 months ago) replaced my front brake pads and rotors. I got them from NAPA auto parts. I got the cheapest pads and rotors, came out to $60 or so for both wheels.

So fast forward to now, my brakes are schreeching like a mofo ('93 Town Car). I assume that its because I got the cheapest pads, but they don't look too worn. So I dunno.

So my question is: What are the best VALUE brake pads (do not read cheapest). Should I go to my Ford dealership and get theirs, or just get the higher grade pads from NAPA, AutoZone, or Pepboys.

Does it even make a difference?

Thanks
Cigar

Remove the brake pads and spray brake anti squeal on the backside of the pads, reinstall and you will be all set to go.
I refuse to install brake pads without it :)

backside as in the side that does not contact the rotors?

EDIT: you know, what a stupid question, of course it is the part that contacts the rotors......

thanks Roger

The backside of the pads, the part of the pad that does not touch the rotor.

Your welcome.

It makes the back of the pads sticky, this prevents them from vibrating at high frequencies. (brake squeal)

I went through the same deal with my wife's car back in April. Started squealing again after a week, but not as loud. Don't feel like pulling it apart again. Not sure what I'd do if I did pull it apart!

'93 Town Car, eh CigarMan? How many miles? How's it holding up?

Don't get lifetime pads, they are usually made of harder materials and will eat up your rotors faster. It's cheaper to replace pads rather than rotors.

Glad you asked! I love bragging about my car!!!

213k miles, no rust. Starts every time. (Burns a little oil though) bought it in '99 for $4500 with $120k miles. I think I got my money's worth!

(BTW I'm 23. Don't care about the image thing. I got more options than you've ever dreamed about!!)

"...bought it in '99 for $4500 with $120k miles."

That was a pretty good deal right there. My '94 Executive was purchased last year for $6,600 with 74K on it. I HATED the color, but couldn't pass it up, because of the great condition. It's got a sun roof and quite a few other bells and whistles, but not as many as the Cartier or Signatures. Best bang for the buck out there, IMO. I had to replace the driver's window switch, ignition wires, lower radiator hose, and two front tires so far, but that's it. I expect to put a LOT more than that into a 10 year old car! Runs like a dream and 19MPG running around town.

Good luck on the brakes. Haven't figured that one out myself, but I'll keep ya posted if I do...

Raybestos Quiet Stop Brake Pads are pretty cheap and work well. You can buy them at any pep boys or autozone.

I asked about this at Kragen the other day that I was there, but they may be e-x-t-e-n-d-i-n-g the truth to sell more. The guy told me the semi-metallic lifetime warranty ones won't eat your rotors. Just the ceramic ones. I didn't even know they made ceramic pads!
Somebody who can verify the truth of that statement please speak up.:D

Also, while your at it, put some new grease on the caliper slide pins.

If you want an easy way of putting on that anti-squeel stuff, you can buy these stick on pads that go on the backing plate of the pads, they function the same as the liquid anti-squeal stuff, but in a stick-on pad. Napa usually sells em, and so does kragen, autozone and pepboys.

Just contacted my local NAPA, whose prices are about $5.00 more than the online prices  He said they don't carry "stick on pads", but shims should be included with their brake pads. Not sure if that's the right thing to eliminate squeal, but I'm VERY interested in anything that is!

Edit: Just talked to AutoZone, who said they don't carry a stick on pad either. He said that spray on Permatex® Disc Brake Quiet should do the job. Guess I'll pull it apart again and slop some more on there!

For those of us who don't want to do our own brakes, would it be a good idea to buy the brake pads of our choice and bring them to a shop to install? How much would that be?

I have the sick-on pads on the backside of the brake pad AND anti-squeal solution on the contact portion...my brakes still squeal

If it an independant shop, it could be a good idea, however, many "chain" places like midas and the like, will not put a warranty on the part if you provide it. To get warranty, you have to buy the part through the shop that does the work. This isn't always the case, however.
