Did they check your rotors and brake pads, when you took it into the shop?

Sometimes warped rotors can cause the car to shake when you brake.

You have to be moving along at a pretty damn good clip to bend a wheel.

If the car has been sitting for a while you could have developed a little rust in the brakes which might clear up with use. If it doesn't then your rotors might need to be replaced or turned.

I'll agree with this assessment.

If the issue is with the rotors then can it be fixed? Or does it need to be replaced? How much is a new rotor? Er I mean in the greater scheme of car parts where is it in the hierarchy.

They might need to be replaced. They can be repaired with a machine that shaves off the top surface of the rotor which makes it flat.

you can take the rotors to autozone or checker where they canmachine it for you at a cost of about $5

I don't think you can turn out a warped rotor. At auto zone you can get rotors as cheap as $25 (and up), but I doubt that's the problem. More than likely you trashed the cv joint (front wheel drive) or a wheel bearing (rear wheel drive). Take it to the dealer for an analysis. Cost is about $40.

If you don't have it replaced, the shaking will screw up the alignment on you car, not to mention ruin any brake pads you put on it. You need to have them fixed. You can get them turned or just replaced. It depends on the amount of damage though. Assuming that's the problem.

Wouldn't he hear popping when turning if it was the CV joints?

why would he only feel it when braking then?

i'm not expert, but warped rotor seems the most likely thing. it may have been warped before and he just never paid any attention because he wasn't already looking out for the vibration.

i'd like to clarify that this shaking is mainly felt when decelerating from a high speed ie 60+...

ohtwell u sure do know alot about cars for a girl 😉

Yeah, but I can't see how the rotor can be warped from that impact. Coulda been warped already, as another poster stated, and it was just noticed. Gettin' away cheap if it's just a rotor. Still, I don't think a warped rotor can be turned, however, a machine shop can tell you in a minute.
I don't know what rotors cost for a Maxima, but a pair of Chinese rotors at AZ cost me $50 a few years back (Buick regal). One rotor for my Mitsubishi PU was $80 or so.
If one rotor is warped, then both sides is going to need attention. Do the brake job and get to know the machinist.

rotors are $100 each if you buy oem's from the nissan parts dept (at least for my '93 maxima gxe w/abs)...
