In huge cities automatic is a lot more convenient when you have to inch your way through the heavy traffic.

Manual because it's lighter, cheaper, faster, more fun, and gets better gas mileage.

not necessarily true. Some automatics actually get better fuel economy than their manual counterparts.

Not the 80's cars I buy 😛

I think a manually controlled CVT would be my perfect transmission. Just a smoothly sliding lever that adjusts gear ratio directly...that way you can keep the RPMs at exactly the value you want, be it maximum horsepower or maximum economy. Too bad they'll NEVER make it.

Ive seen plenty of CVTs that let you select between economy, normal, and sport mode. Might not be a continuous slider, but close enough.

Either way, I prefer a manual, but I'm not the biggest fan of it in traffic. I can deal with it since its only occasional to me, but if I lived in LA and gridlock was part of every morning, auto all the way.

And as far as Im concerned, a paddle-shifter that has an auto mode is just as much a manual as a cluck/stick - just a different kind of manual.

I've always driven cars with manual transmissions. I don't hate automatics, but when I drive one it just isn't any fun for me.

gears > clutchpacks and brakeband and valvebody and junk.

although i'd like to see one of those DSG boxes, wonder how that's set up.

Not nearly close enough...I want to do the shifting!

As for paddle shifters, it only counts if there is an actual clutch in the transmission, not a torque converter. The computer might operate the clutch, but it has to be in there.

I hope I never buy an automatic. Cars with an available SMG (like the M3/M5) are tempting, but I don't have enough money for one of those so I don't have to consider those... yet.

Manual for fun factor and control.

Never driven an SMG/DSG, but I can't imagine it being more fun or precise than a manual.
It may be more efficient and quicker, but that's not the point.

I read this somewhere once.
SMG/autos are like the special programmable controllers used for console fighting games.
You may be able to pull off the combo/special everytime, but it's much more satisfying doing it yourself.

There's nothing more gratifying than executing the perfect rev-matched downshift or heel-toe manuever
