YACT: Auto Transmission people, Do you use your parking brake on flat parking spaces?

In the end, using the parking brake all the time is never bad for the transmission, and it keeps the parking brake linkage/mechanism working. So really, if it can't cause harm, but it can prevent wear.... why not use it?

I would if my parking brake worked 😉

NFS4, the issue is not so much as the car "running away" as it is relieving the tranny from the stress of holding the car against a grade.

what a concept... using your parking brake when parking. 😛

i use it just in case somebody rear ends me. that, and so it won't rock back and forth when pushed.

hmmm, seems you WOULDN'T want the parking brake on when someone bumped into you while parking as it would reduce the damage to the exterior vs what would happen were the parking brake on.

yeah but it would increase possible damage to the transmission if you don't put on the parking brake. and the worst part is it probably wouldn't be enough damage to break it right then and there (my mom once threw a car into park at 15 miles an hour when her brakes went out and she paniced, and it still worked afterwards), so it wouldn't get replaced by insurance. you'd just be stuck with a weakened transmission.

Blame that on cars having foot parking brakes that are useless for emergencies.

Though I agree that foot parking brakes suck, you can stomp on them the same as you can a regular brake pedal...

Yes, I always do, when driving any car, be it manual or automatic.

I think car makers know a little better than you, hence why the damn thing is there

Confused

I always use my parking brake now. I had a problem where the rear brakes in my Camry weren't working a while ago and they said that I have to use the parking brake. I've used it ever since.

edit: HA, I even typed "brake" correctly once. Moron.

My routine when parking:

1) Place car in Neutral
2) Engage hand brake
3) Remove foot from brake
4) Wait a sec
5) Put car in Park

Oh...and...btw...it's BRAKE not break!

Yeah, I'm dumb and wasn't paying attention when I was typing.

Most cars you have to have your foot on the brake when you move out of neutral, especially when you're going through reverse. What kind of car do you drive?

I have to use the parking brake. I drive a stick

I drive a stick and I just leave it in 1st, 2nd, or reverse.. If I'm on an incline, I use parking brake AND leave it in gear. But, in FL, most places I park are almost perfectly flat.

(thanks for the 'brake not break' comment)

i don't quite understand this comment. a lot of people that have manuals just leave it in gear instead of using the parking brake.

Hunh? I've never heard of a car like that. I have a '96 Chrysler Sebring convertible. Every car I've owned I've done that and even some rentals I've had.

only on steep inclines. My rational is this: If my Park gear fails, it means my car is totalled because a transmission repair would cost more than the car is worth. And, 'sides, I have a relatively new tranny in there, anywho (it went with a few hundred miles left on warrantee! hahah!)

However, if I'm parked in a space where the possibility exists for a rollaway car doing serious damage, parking branke all the way.

Isn't the parking brake used in conjunction with the parking gear, meaning it shares the stress? Seems like it'd save your transmission in that case.

Every car I've every driven makes you have your foot on the brake to shift into reverse from either direction. My girlfriend's Jetta actually makes me have my foot on the brake to shift either way out of neutral which I think is stupid.
