When my car goes from 1st-->2nd gear or 2nd-->3rd gears, it seems like it loses power. I've been driving the thing for 8 years, but only recently has this become noticeably "weaker". Does it have something to do with the gas these days (I'm in NY)... heard something about ethanol or something. Or does it have to do with something else ? Could it be time to check the Auto Tranny Fluid ?

well the "dog teeth" might be getting worn, that'd be like a clutch slipping right? would that be loss of power?! Just throwing things out......i know next to nothing about it

does the engine rev and the car doesn't move forewards like it should(tranny slipping) or is it just bogging?

It's a 95 Isuzu Rodeo. Engine isn't revving like the tranny's slipping..., the RPM drops when it shifts (but it feels like it's really dropping a lot - hence the feel like a noticeable loss of power). Should the ATF be checked after the car's cooled off ? I gotta wait then...

It should actually be checked while warm and while the car is running.

Just RTFM'd... says to start the engine, go through all the gears with the parking brake engaged... P R 3 2 1 L then back to P... make sure the car is on level ground... and check it while idle. It can be warm, but not hot (otherwise wait 30 mins).

Also says if the fluid is low, it can cause a slipping tranny... hopefully that's all this is... low fluid level I mean. Supposed to be changed every 20,000 miles.

might also be your torque converter solenoid. if its not locking again after it shifts it might feel like you dont have any power. what kind of car?

sounds to me like the torque converter is locking up too early, which would explain the big drop in rpm's and the bogging of the engine. basically when a torque converter locks, it is making a physical(as opposed to fluid) connection between the enging and the transmission, so you lose the torque multiplication of the converter, thus less power output

Bought some ATF because I checked the level this morning and it was below the "hot zone" on the dipstick.

3 questions from this point forward:

1) It's Dexron III (my manual says to use Dexron IIE)... guys said it was a better specification and it's ok to use. True?

2) I obviously already have the other stuff in the engine... do I just add this Dexron III on top of it? What about the differences in specs?

3) It's ok to add this stuff right through the dipstick right ?

Dexron III is backwards compatible with II, not sure what the E is though. You fill it through the dipstick, with either a special hose connection or a funnel. and yes, just top it up :) When you add a bit, run the car through the gears then check it again. it may not be necessary but it can't hurt to get as accurate a reading as you can

yeah, what he said.

Also try totally changing the fluid
