YACT: Are remanufactured half axles any good?

Are the remanufactured axles you get at Autozone ( I think the brand is CCT) any good, or am I going to be replacing them often if I end up using them instead of OEM? The price is certainly right $60 versus almost $200 for a new OEM Honda part.

I have used them and have never had any major problems. Just make sure you check you motor/trans mounts and also make sure nothing is loose that may have damaged the CV joint to begin with.

I think these remanufactured ones are really just the core returns from the dealer sold off to companies that rebuild and sell 'em.

They will work , but nothing beats a Honda part .

Put it this way, don't be surprised if the reman you buy for $60 isn't rebuilt correctly. I have a feeling that they just clean them off, regrease and reboot them and do nothing else.

My personal experience with Autozone axles for my 91 Accord has been two bad ones. IE, I put one in and had to change it out a week later for another since the first was worn out. But when you find one that's ok its no different then a Honda one.

i put some remanufactored halfs onto my 1990 Mazda Protege about 1997, they are still doing fine today, it had maybe 70k or 80k miles at the time, i am up to 169k now

Importecparts I buy a lot of stuff from this place and they have pretty good prices for parts on imports.

New axles (Lobro) are about $130 to $158 (depending on left or right axle) each, versus rebuilt (Acei) ones at $75 each. Keep in mind there are differnt axles for your LX: abs and non-abs. To me, I'd rather replace a whole axle with a rebuilt on than just get a boot change because its a lil more cost effective, that is unless you get a bad rebuild one.

I remember reading a while back that the axles that are bought from honda are rebuilt, or was that starters and alternators?

Car Component Technologies (CCT) is a huge remanufacturer of under-car components.

Whether the CV shafts and axles you purchase come in a box labeled Parts Master, NAPA, Car Quest, Auto Value, All Pro, Autozone, et. al., odds are its a rebranded CCT product. CCT recently merged with American Remanufacturers, Inc. (ARI) and the new company retains ARI's name.

I just put two in my van and had to take one back right after I opened the package. The outer joint was busted and the only thing holding it together was the rubber boot. They are easy to replace in my van and since I am feeding about 100ft-lbs more torque through it than stock the lifetime warranty they come with may come in handy .

Then be prepared to pay $400 for an alternator from Nissan. Heck, the Honda dealer replaced the alternator on our (now my) Accord years ago with a rebuilt.

In most cases mechanics prefer to regrease and reboot a busted joint so they don't have to worry about a bad rebuild. The only reason those CV joints go bad is because of busted boots and lack of lubrication.

When I worked for a major automotive distributor, we would toss these things up to each other when stocking them on multi-level racks that were 14 feet high. We had to climb those suckers then stradle the aisle and catch them to put them on the rack. OSHA would probably have closed the place down if they saw us.

An occassional bad toss or catch would result in one crashing to the cement floor, often on one end. Sorry dude!
