YACT: Anyone know what this noise in my car means?

I drive an '00 Monte Carlo. There is some kind of noise that sounds like what a small motor would sound like if it were going out. Here's what I know:

- I only hear it at high speeds.
- The noise gets louder as the RPMs go up.
- I can hear it inside the car, but I can't recreate it outside the car, no matter how high the RPMs go.
- It makes no difference if the A/C is on or not.
- It's not alternator feedback coming through the speakers because it still makes the noise when the radio is off.
- It's just loud enough that I don't hear it if the radio is on at any decent volume.

Any ideas? Any questions? Thanks for any help. I have to drive back home (4 hour drive) this weekend, so I want to know if I'm going to be in danger of breaking down on the way.

A guess. Old belts get hard and can make noise. It might be wind noise from a puckered
or folded door gasket. I doubt it's a water pump bearing howl. IDK.

Post an mp3 so everyone can guess 😉

I dont know what you mean, my mom has a 13 year old bonneville that runs perfectly. Oh like asian, coffee can pos leaf blower cars hu.

Bearings going? Our Malibu er some similar Chevy car made a whining noise that increased with the RPMs, but started only over a certain speed; we could never tell where it was coming from, but it turned out to be the front wheel bearings. Nothing too critical, as we drove it for probably a few thousand miles before getting them replaced.

No idea if your situation is anything similar, but it sounds so to me - unless you're hearing it when you're not moving? I couldn't really tell from your post.

i hear a noise like this in my 98 ford exploer. it only happens when my car slows down from about 55 down. when i use the gas as well as the breaks then let go of the gas, i don't hear it. also i hear it sometimes about 35 mph but usually it isn't as loud as when i slow down from 55. also, it doesn't happen all the time. and it can go a few days in between my hearing the noise almost everytime i slow down, to not hearing it at all for a few days. it sounds like an electric motor going out as well. anyone?

You'll have to be more specific. It sounds like an electric motor spinning down? It sounds like a lawnmower engine sputtering and dying? It sounds like a RC plane with a blown pipe?

Is it a whine? A whirr? A tick? A moan? A whistle? A wheeze? A rattle?

whatever it is i think our noises are similar. it sounds like a whirr.

If it happens with increased RPM it has to be in the engine or drivetrain. Could be a noisy rear end or a lot of other things, I'd have to hear it. One thing to do is to start the car and put it in neutral and see if you hear it when you rev, or only in gear, or only when moving.

i only hear it when i decelerate. if i hold the gas downa lil bit while i apply the breaks, once i'm to about 35 mph from 55 mph or higher the noise doesn't occur. ALSO note the noise doesn't always happen when i slow down. just sometimes.

one time i let the car roll to a stop and the noise kept happening until the car was going about 5mph then it went away.

Sounds like rear end noise to me. Has it gradually gotten louder?

no. the noise varies when it does happen. at 35 mph its not too loud. sometimes it is. it depends how quick i hit the gas for the noise to go away.

pushing the gas pedal when the noise starts makes the noise stop. weird i know

My thoughts exactly, either that or maybe some kind of transission problem.. just an educated guess though, I d suggest checking both the tranny fluid & the same in the rear differential before departing if possible.

the rear differential, do u mean the rear axle? or the transfer case. the transfer case fluid is fine, as is the transmission fluid. this noise has been ongoing on and off the past 2 1/2 months. i just haven't had the cash to fix it 🙁. i did get the transfer case motor replaced but it wasn't teh cause of the noise so that was $100 down the drain 🙁

Yeah, it's a whirr. It sounds like an electric motor spinning down, very accurate way of putting it.

Get your tires balanced. You would be suprised at the noises unbalanced tires can cause. Even noises you think are in the drivetrain.
