YACT: Anybody ever buy a car in another city?

I've been trying to find the car I want for about two months now. Had no luck even with having a local dealer looking for one at auctions and such. However, I've found basically exactly what I want in another city about 4 hours away, which oddly enough is where I'll be moving to in about a month for grad school. Obviously, buying the car there would be handy for warranty purposes, since I'll be there. My concern is that I don't really know anyone up there I can trust to look it over before I buy it, nor do I know the dealership like I do the local ones. How do you handle buying a car from another town?

What kind of car is it?

I live in Panama City, but my father drove to Talahassee to purchase his 2000 Honda Civic in Aug. 2000. The process is no different than if you were to buy it in your own town.

1) warranty claims can be done at any dealer for that make, and usually dealers for other brands that make owns (like a chevy dealer can fix buicks, pontiacs, whatever)
2) use a fax machine. tell them what you want, and that you want a quote. its probably the best method for dealing with any dealer.

1999 black 2dr Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. I was looking for a 2000 or 2001 model, but this one has really low miles so I don't mind going a year or two older.

I realize the process is the same, my concern is that I don't know the dealership or anyone I can have look at it before I buy it, whereas in town I trust both the dealership and my mechanic who I'd have look it over.

well, you could consult the power of ATOT to see if anyone has a mechanic they trust in whatever town that is

Good idea. I doubt anybody knows someone though. It's Lincoln, Ne.
