Is the S2000 expensive to maintain?
In the 15K range, you'll be looking at 2001-2002 S2000s with about 65-75K miles. Powertrain wise you should be fine with regular maintenance as long as the car was well taken care of (oil changes, transmission and diff fluid changes every year).
The one big area can be the clutch as it's a PITA to change it. At that mileage you'll have to expect a clutch change in the next year or so if the car was well driven, or ready for a change if not very well driven. Stock clutch + labor will probably be $1000-1200.
Ideally you'll find one with the clutch just recently changed.
The other area of $$ is tires - the stock S02s get about 12-15K miles of life. The newer S2000s use RE-050s which last a bit longer. You can fine some good tires for cheaper than OEM (Falken RT-615, Kuhmo MX, etc) but you'll still only get about 12-15K miles on them.
Find one driven by an enthusiast who knows how to take care of his cars and you should be fine. Unfortunately used S2000 prices have gotten low enough that there are some young kids who just beat on the cars, trash the transmissions, and spin out into the gutter - so avoid those cars.
It's very responsive and as neutral as a street car gets so if you're coming from a FWD car, brush up on your driving technique to avoid spinning.
