Or forget the MR2 or any sports car and just buy a reliable $5k car and spend the extra $10 on a house.

But the mod bug won't make it so cheap.:D My question for the OP is how old is he, does he have another car or is this going to be his primary car.

I got a 2000 Z28 Camaro for under 15K with less than 50K miles. Don't wory about skills - you pick them up. I never drove stick before, but I bought the Camaro, took a friends VW out for about 30 minutes, and the next day drove the Camaro home. I would go with an 8 because I, for one, love the feel and growl from the 8. I get about 22-25 mpg and I have the power there if I need it.

You can find Honda S2000s for under $15k. The only two choices in my opinion are the miata and s2000.

Any BMW from the E30 chasis 3-series (post 1988 when they changed the bumpers)... So 1989-1991 BMW 3-series

Or for a car that fits your 4-Cylinders request and is an amazing part of auto history...the E30 M3 1989-1991.

Of those only the 944 and 924S could be considered "reasonable" to maintain. ($1,000 - $2,000 / year to maintain.) None of them are "cheap".

The 968 had very limited production and parts are excruciatingly expensive.

The 951 will run about $4,000 - $5,000 / year to maintain given the age of the cars now. In the last 15 months I've put over $10,000 into my 951. (That's more money that I put into my first car in the entire 5 years I had it.) I do NOT recommend it as a car that is cheap to maintain.

It's also important to note that you can't just go to any old mechanic with a 944/951/968, and most of the time the Porsche dealership wants nothing to do with you. In a large city there might be two, maybe three mechanics total who are competent when working on the 944 series cars. If you live in the middle of nowhere, you pretty much better have experience fixing cars on your own.

Don't get me wrong, I love the 944 series, but they're old (oldest: 23 years, newest: 11 years). And old stuff is old stuff. They require attention and maintenance.

Plenty of fun . . if your concept of 'fun' is spending all your time trying to keep it tuned and replacing
all the parts that keep falling apart.

Hemmings + Bugeye Sprite

I am absolutely fascinated by the Morgan Roadster (not the Aero 8). I love its classic looks and am very grateful that Morgan still makes them.

It's the Virginia Tech Formula SAE car (also my senior design project). It's a rear engine, rear drive Formula style car, weighs around 450 lbs, engine is a Honda 600CBR (600cc 4 cyl. motorcycle engine from the Honda F4i) We are required to run a 20mm intake restrictor and have a max. allowable displacement of 610cc, so the engine has been bored to 608. We make around 93 horsepower, which isn't bad when you look at the weight. Chassis is a steel space frame with carbon fiber shear panels. Transmission housing is stock bike, internals are secret. ;) Most everything is made in house with the exception of engine block and some internals, transmission housing, some differential internals (nobody wants to try to make a Torsen-style differential), rear outer CV joints, brake calipers and data acquisition system.

The video is a test of our launch control system, which engages the clutch and sets a lower rev. limiter in the ballpark of 7500RPM, releasing the switch dumps the clutch and takes the rev. limiter back to 12,500. (We already had pneumatic clutch actuation because of our paddle shifting system, so we figured why not have launch control?) :)

EDIT: our theoretical top speed is well over 90MPH, but I think it would go a lot faster than that, just don't think it would be aerodynamically stable. Nobody has the balls to find out :)

EDIT EDIT: I just realized that I have 3 smileys in 1 post and that I look like some teenager on MySpace. Forgive me ATOT. :( <--- that's 4.

Yep. I'm actually suspension designer for the 2008 car. We have a 2 year design cycle, right now we are designing the car that will be built next year, and the other half of the team is building the car that they designed last year. The car you saw is the car that was built and competed last year.

There is a yearly competition in Michigan sponsored by SAE. Around 140 colleges from around the world show up.
