YACT: any Lotus Elise fan?

I visited my friend down at San Diego two weeks ago. On the way I went passed a European Exotic Car dealer (Symoblic). Being curious and all, I walked in and felt the grandeur of a handful of Bentleys and Roll Royces. After feeling a bit outclassed (understatement), I gather enough courage to pop a question to the oh-so-busy-I-am-on-the-phone-so-don't-bother-me-as-i-am-closing-on-a-575-Maranello-deal salesperson. I asked him, "Do you guys have any info on the Lotus Elise?" He courteously replied, "Oh, we had one in the showroom just last week, but we gave it back to Lotus. It will feature a Toyota 1.8L 190 hp engine (the J-spec celica GTS engine, instead of the euro "Ecotec" engine with 140 hp)

whao. a lightweight, torqueless, Mid Engine Rear drive 2 seater .... humm, ring a bell?

It weighs soemthing like 1700 lbs. Or even less, I can't remember.
still..that's jsut pitiful
You have no clue. 190 hp with only 1,700 lbs to push around will be a rocket. And it will handle amazingly well. My mother's '98 Maxima has 190 hp and weighs almost one ton (2,000) pounds more than the Elise. The Maxima has a mid-six-second 0-60 time. Imagine that power with one ton less steel to lug around.

As Colin Chapman used to say, "For speed, add lightness."

pure sports car

Nice cars I love lotus styling.
EDIT: I think it weighs like 750 kgs. I love that car... if I had the cash I would buy one any idea what they run at.

😱

Sorry guys....I have a honda accord with 120hp.

<--has the habit of looking down on cars with anywhere near that Hp

Most cars average about 3k lbs, right?

How would the numbers be on this thing?

HP is kinda a poor way to judge the performance of a car without factoring in MANY other variables such as weight, gearing and if thats 200 RPM peak or if that 190 is held over a wide range of RPM's. If you could get that 190 from idle to red line in a light car (Which the Elise is) you'd have a friggin rocket.
Also, Lotus isnt known for making slow cars by any stretch anyways. And I'm sure if Lotus felt the need they could substantially increase the output, but that may not be how they want to car, to just be a straight line rocket (Camaro?) but rather a very well rounded performance vehicle (NSX anyone?)

Interesting..never thought about the powercurve etc....

Ah. The Elise. Here's the scoop. The Rover engine used in Europe doesn't come close to meeting emissions regulations in the states. So, they ship cars over without engines. The most popular choice is the B18C5 otherwise known as the 195 hp 1.8L DOHC VTEC engine found in ITR's. With this combination the Elise will outpace a Mustang Cobra R in all tests; handling, acceleration, braking, etc. It is truly an awesome thing.

Here's the article with the comparison. Elise ran a 12.6 at 110 while the Cobra ran a 13.36 at 106.

Yeah, sounds like the Porsche 914. 😛

ZV

actually, I am thinking about the MR2 (notice I captialized the M and the R ? 😛 🙂
basically, the Elise will be a faster, sweeter MR2 that will cost twice of the MR-S.

also, the price is $38000, $1000 deposit now and the car will be yours next year.

meanwhile, the US version of the Elise will be a bit heavier due to safety equipments. (stronger bumpers and airbags??? i have no idea )
