YACT: Any common problems with either of these?

both can come with the sport package.

I could be wrong...but the 6s is strictly a 6 cyl car. The sport package does not correspond to the "s". I confirmed this with a mazda dealer when I was there.

right but the 4 cyl version is only available in the 6i...not the 6s. The i corresponds to the 4 cyl motor and the s corresponds to the 6 cyl motor. There is also a "sport" package that adds other features such as a spoiler...but it doesn't have anything to do with the engine

At any rate, my only input on the 6 is I was thoroughly unimpressed with the V6 slushbox I drove....but I'd still choose it over a new model eclipse.

What are some smaller/sportier cars you would recommend?

See the sig? 02-03 WRX for about $14k.

Or Prelude...always wanted one of those.

You should note tho, just because I didn't like the 6s doesn't mean you won't. I wouldn't really consider either car you mention sporty.

If you get an auto 6 be careful and do a GOOD test drive first. My wife's Mazda 6 was replaced by Mazda because the transmission was complete garbage and they couldn't figure out what was wrong with it.

What year and what did you notice was wrong with it?

My buddy has a 6i he loves, just wishes it had more power. The general concensus I've heard is that the Mazda6 V6 isn't very impressive; perhaps you might consider a V6 Altima or Maxima? I'd say a WRX or Legacy GT, but those sip Premium gas with a little lower mileage than most V6's. However AWD and Subbie reliability is something to consider 🙂

<---Wants new LGT to replace my 97 LGT 😀

EDIT Another friend of mine has owned three Mitsu's says he won't buy another....he had like two Eclipses and now an Evo

It was an 03, replaced with an 04. About 60% of the time it would drive around normally, but occasionally it would go into "complete retard mode" (what I called it) and it would either not shift and bounce of the rev limiter 4 or 5 times and then shift with such a violence that you'd swear you were flat foot shifting a manual with a stage 4 clutch. Or it would not downshift and make this bizarre squealing noise for a few seconds and then again, downshift from maybe 4th to something completely ridiculous like 1st and bounce of the rev limiter and then repeat the above actions.

Kinda left a bad taste in my mouth for the auto after that. Even the 04 was not nearly as smooth as it should have been. I think that's why they ditched the 5spd auto for a 6spd auto in the 05, just speculation there though.

ya I drove the 6 speed and it was amazingly smooth.

I wasn't impressed with the torque put out by first gear...but 2nd was quite good. However, this was in the 2006 model. I am not a fan of the look of the WRX and want something midsize to small....and have a bit of a "sport" look to it.

Why are you requesting NFS4's help with this? He's not an auto mechanic...or an expert on used cars and I don't think he's owned either of the cars you are considering. 😕

I just know he reads up on cars quite a bit, and he owns a Mazda 3, which I would assume shares many similar aspects to the 6. Seemed to make sense to me...but if there are better qualified, I would value their opinion! 🙂

No problem. Now, if you were looking for an opinion on new cars or buzz within the auto industry he'd be the guy to go to. 😉

Very true

The one thing that got me 😕 about these two cars is the Mits got high mechanical reliability marks from JDpower while the mazda did well on their interior. I woulda though the reliability of the 6 woulda been higher. Guess I was disillusioned.

what is the real difference between the 3 and the 6? anything noticable other than engine size? and is it even worth the extra dough

3 is smaller. From the looks of it has a smaller wheelbase and is taller. Not sure on the other details.
