YACT: Am I getting a good deal on this Protege5? Question regarding rebates in general.

I've been negotiating with a local dealer for a new Protege5. The $2250 rebate from Mazda spurred my interest in this vehicle.

It's a Midnight Blue P5 with the Moonroof option. Here is the break down of the quotation given to me. The "Minus Rebate" total is the final price - I would essentially cut the guy a check for this amount and the vehicle would be mine.

MSRP: $17836
Quoted price: $16836 (which is 200 over invoice)
6.5% Sales Tax: $17930
Title + Documentation Fee: $18010
Minus Rebate: $15760

Now here's the question. Is the sales tax supposed to calculated on the AFTER rebate price (in this case $14586) or BEFORE rebate price ($16836)?

Tax locally is 6.5%, which amounts to a ~$150 difference depending on when it's calculated on the subtotal. Any advice? Should I have him recalculate the sales price?

That's not how the salesman represented the deal.:| From our first emails, he indicated that he would get the vehicle to me for "$14586 + tax/title/fees."

One of those is an owner loyalty rebate. Have you owned a Mazda recently or ever?

Yea, the price isn't bad at all. I am dissapointed in the salesman's misrepresentation of the original quote. The final price should be another $150 less.

Come to think of it, I think there is a $500 loyalty rebate on all Mazda models. I wonder if they are stackable with the $2250.:D

Have fun shopping next week. I would have bought a Mazda6, but the $1500 rebate is only available for the non-sport package models, and for me the sports package was a must. For the options I wanted, the Mazda6 would have cost me another $8000 ($22k + tax/title = $24k).
