hi,

Im looking for a car alarm, and i realize that i will have to have it installed, as i dont know what to do, but I am wondering, if Im going to shell out ~350 for a car alarm/remote starter kit will I be able to remove it and put it in another car? How hard would that be? The car in question would be a 1990 toyota camry dx.

Yeah, i've seen do it yourself kits for like $100 (or less) for that. I was actually thinking about that at one point for my car.

I would. I know nothing about installing things like this in cars though.

If you feel adventurous and want to try installing one yourself, you can get a kit for much less than $350.

I have bought a couple from Bulldogsecurity, they run in the $50 to $150 range, depending on the model and accesories you want/need. Bulldog might be a little pricer than some of the others, but they have good documentation on their website, and actually answer tech support questions via email and phone (at least when I used them several years ago).

If you can comfortably install a car stereo and know how to use a multimeter, you could probably manage one of the DIY kits. The installation manuals/car wiring diagrams are posted online at their site, if you want to know what you would be getting yourself into beforehand. The only pain for me was bypassing the GM factory anti-theft systems (they have kits for this too); I don't know if your Toyota has a similar system or not.

The unit itself would be easy to move into another vehicle, but you would probably want to buy new wiring harnesses if they are available; it would be somewhat of a pain to (neatly) uninstall the wiring.

Also, you might have trouble finding a suitable remote starter if you have a manual transmission and/or do not have fuel injection.

Good Luck.
