YACT: Air intake hose question...

My engine recently started freaking out so I looked under the hood and found that my air intake hose had been cut/torn open on the top. After replacing the hose, my engine ran smoother, but my gas mileage has decreased substantially (5 mpg).

Is this normal?

Car is a 95 Mazda Protege DX.

Could be a combination of winter mix fuel and the more restrictive intake.
