My airbag light came on in my car a few months ago. I took it to the dealer today to get it fixed. They told me that the clockspring (located underneath the steering column) needed to be replaced. It would cost me $236.50 + labor to get it replaced. Has anyone heard of such a thing? They were saying that they couldnt guarantee that the airbag (just drivers side, passenger side unaffected) would go off in a timely manner or go off at all when it needed to. Guess I should fix it since it could prevent injuries or even save me in case of a major accident.

1998 Hyundai Elantra Sedan (no Hyundai bashing, please).

Edit: It has ~60,100 miles on it.

Unfortunately I cannot pull up all the TSB's for some reason.
I would talk to them about it.
If the system is damaged, you should not have to worry about premature AirBag deployment, they have many fail safes to prevent such an occurance.

What happened to the 10 year/100,000 mile warranty ?

Looks like I have to order a report to get the description unless I'm missing something.

Personally, I'd just leave it be. As long as you're wearing a seat belt properly there's really no situation in which an air bag will be a life saver. Then again, I'm a bit of a luddite when it comes to things like airbags, ABS, and daytime running lights so take my advice with more than a few grains of salt.

Actually for a 1998 model, the warranty expired at 36,000 miles.

Zenmervolt: The numbers you quoted are for models 2000 and after.
