YACT - AC smells musty

It's a pretty common problem. Mold and mildew grows inside the A/C system and hence the smell. You can take it to a shop and they can clean it for you, or I think there are kits to do it yourself.

undiluted commercial coil cleaner

Ain't nothin going kto be smellin any longer.

how do I access the coil on a vehicle AC?

Step 1) Open hood
Step 2) Remove everything
Step 3) Start spraying

Coil cleaner is similar to the stuff used to degrease engines, just about 50x stronger.

That might work. If it's really bad though you might need to clean the ducts and coils by hand.

I'm only offering my thoughts and not stepping on some of the good advice in this thread.

The musty oder, is it slightly sweet and linger in your olfactory (nose) 🙂 If it does, it's most likely a heater core with a slight leak. It doesn't take much, two drops a day will do it.

If on the other hand it's just the a/c evaporator (no sweetness to the oder), set the system to fresh air only, locate
the air intake and spray a whole can of Lysol Disinfectant in the air stream. This will kill most of it. Have the fan on high speed. You may have to CAREFULLY drill a small hole in the ducting under the dashboard and use a tube nozzle.
The excess will drain out. I've done this before but not on a Dodge ( I got a 94 Dakota).

Never use the max setting on the cold slid control because this feature recirculates the air in the cab causing nasties
to collect on the evaporator, its really bad if your a smoker. Allways use a fresh air setting for your a/c because it will kill the mold.

The only time I recirculate the air for my a/c is during 100 degree days in the desert.

It is kind of sweet. I recently had the heater core replaced, b hut this happened before that too. Hmmmm....I'll have to try some things.

Whoa, I so need this! Shortly after I bought my Accord I managed to leave the sunroof open overnight and the interior was subject to over 8 hours of constant rain (and on top of that a bird shat right onto the center console!) I cleaned the interior really well the next day (mold/mildew preventer, wet-dry vac, etc.) but ever since then I've had that musty smell when turning on the AC. Will definately see if Pep Boys or similar has this in stock.

it wasn't the body under the hood. it was the two dead pigs in the front seat. Damn Mythbusters....I have to try out everything the do!

To fix my AC smell I had to take the ducting apart and scrape it with a screwdriver. It wasn't pretty. :disgust:
