YACT, about my maxima. Found out my problem from a couple weeks ago is likely a starter issue

I was having problems with my 97 maxima a couple weeks ago, and occasionally ever since. Every once in a while it would not turn over. We narrowed it down to the starter, and once I found that, I reached down in there to see what I could see, and kinda moved the cable coming out of it a bit. And after that the car started fine. This has happened 3-4 times since then. Each time all I have to do is move that wire a bit and it fires back up, although the last time it took a bit more tinkering to get it to work. Well I finally have the time to be without the car for a day or 2, so I think I should probablly have it replaced. Just wondering how much that will run me.

I know that in order to get to it it requires the removal of the air filter container, the MAF sensor and some other stuff, then obviously the cost of the starter itself. So anybody know what that will run?

Really, thats not horrible I guess, I figured labor would be more.

Let me aks you this, my father in law says the starter itself is fine(which is actually probablly true)since it does work. It's likely the wire that is the issue, which again I agree with. But from what I can see of it, the wire is directly attached to the starter, not plugged or screwed in or anything. He thinks that I could just have that wire reaplced, think hes right?

Not sure, but I think I already linked to www.motorvate.ca, which details the procedure to replace a started in a 95 maxima.

Yeah Skoorb, that pic helped me locate the starter, and I am attempting to get back thier to see it again, but the website is being a pain.

Alright, i got back to that site. Here is the link. Although if you look at the picture in which they circled the starter, they circled the cylindrical unit near the center of the picture. My problematic part is actually the slightly bigger cylindrical part kinda below and behind it, better seen in the third picture. I was informed that part was the starter and the other part was likely the solenoid.

Looks like if these people are telling me wrong, then I guess I will take it to a pro.

The bigger cylinder is the starter. The smaller is the solenoid.

Just cause it works sometimes, doesn't mean it's not bad. Starters can get a "burned spot" in the internal contacts, and when it comes to rest on that spot, it won't turn over. Sometimes you must tap it (NOT BANG IT) with a hammer to get it to catch.

If yours works all the time when you jiggle the wire, it might just be a loose connection. Did you try tightening the bolts/checking wires for continuity? MAKE SURE you disconnect the battery if you attempt this....if you short those starter terminals w/a screwdriver or something while you are underneath it, it may start with you under it!

No I can't easily access it. I can reach it with my hand, but not enough room to actually check connections and what not. I can plainly see a tear in the sheat of the main wire though. The wire looks okay though. But it appears to be directly connected to the starter, doesn't seem like something you can easily replace on its own.

But I just went to the auot parts store to pick up the haynes manual for the car. Had a little trouble turning over when leaving. Got home shut it off and tried to refire, now all I get is one single click when I turn the key. I have tried messing with it like before and its not doing any good now. It doesn't even make the normal click click click click type of sound as it would earlier. Just one click right when you turn the key, then nothing.
