never mix

Why would you? Just change your oil...or if you're topping it off, buy the same weight, and preferbly the same brand/kind (not as important as weight...just something I like to do)

yes it will be fine. You will just raise or lower the starting weight of the oil depending on the majority.

Yeah, you'll have to have your pan dropped and your engine flushxored cause you'll be popping gaskets left and right!!!11

Once you change oil, you can never go back!

. . .

It's fine.

well, I use 5w-30 for the summer and 10w-30 for the winter. when I do the oil change, I got some left. so I just mix them up in one bottle.

Do you have that backwards? 10w30 for summer and 5w30 for winter is better. But I run 10w30 year round.

You mean the other way around?

You should have a lighter winter oil when the battery is weaker due to the temperature.

It isn't going to hurt anything in a pinch. Much better to mix the oils than to run low or whatnot.

Keep the 5w30 in the hondas and the 10w30 in the toyotas (assuming you have a japanese car). Unless you live in a place like socal, where the weather is so perfect that it doesn't matter if you put 1030 into a honda.

Engines prefer to be a little bit low on oil much more than they prefer to be overfilled. There's no way to know for your specific application other than consulting an appropriate forum or guru, but engines can deal quite well with being a quart low.

As long as there is enough oil to keep the sump from running dry, there's enough oil.

The problem with too much oil is that it submerges the rapidly spinning crankshaft - resulting in a nice frothy petroleum mousse. Oil pumps and passages are not optimally designed for transporting mousse.

If you're only .5 qt over in a 5 qt application, the odds are good that you won't have any problems, but the best thing to do is check the dipstick.
