YACT: A complete nightmare with my rims, major migrane

I got a 2005 mustang back in January and it came with 20" Enkei LX-6 chrome rims. While I did not really like the rims much, I figured they were worth alot and came with the car. I was in no hurry to get new ones though, was going to wait and find a decent deal on ebay for some 18" inch gunmetal rims.

So sometime in February I noticed that the front left rim was dented. It was no big deal at the time, and I did not have the time to go get it fixed. I am unsure what caused that. Well shortly after that I let my gf take the car for a spin. She called me up and told me that the front right wheel was not holding air, and I was like "wtf". I asked her if she hit anything and she said no.

When I originally bought the car, I got a Tire & Rim protection policy through Autonation. So I filled the front right tire up with air and brought it over to the dealership. Left it with them for a few days and drove my Accord. They discovered that the front right wheel had a hole in it, from something that it hit and it could not be repaired, but the front lefts ding could be. 750 bucks later (warranty covered 550 of it) it is fixed.

So here comes monday night (3 days after getting fixed). I am driving, and doing between 35-40 on these north dallas roads hit a small reflector. It takes a chip out of the front left rim and ruins it, and dents the back left. I take it into the dealership and find out that the warranty will not cover the front left rim because it was something on the road.

I complained to Enkei, and they said they would take a look at the rims, but kept trying to put the blame on me. I well told them that a RIM should not BREAK going less than 40 over a bump. I also said that I have hit much worse things on 20" rims and that they did not fall apart like this, and my tires are not super low profile either.

So right now I am driving my accord around while my mustang sits in the apartment complex with a spare tire on the front left until I can afford some new rims. Any suggestions on where to go next?

Cliffs:

1. Bought car with 20" enkei rims already on it
2. Over month period one dents, another gets hole in it. No idea what caused it
3. Warranty pays for most, get one repaired and a new one.
4. Repaired one breaks over a reflector & back left dents 3 days later, warranty will not cover.
5. Major headache, driving accord while mustang is sitting in parking lot.

Sucks man.

Out of curiosity, where should you put a donut on a RWD car? FWD is a nobrainer, put it on the back wheels, all they do is prevent the frame from dragging, but on RWD you don't want to put it on the back because thoses wheels do the driving, and you don't want it on the front because those wheels do most of the stopping. Where does it go?

Remember the front wheels take most of the force while braking and braking is 1000000x more important that accelerating. Remember, you don't want the front tires to blow or it will be really difficult to steer.

Yeah, those 20" wheels look cool I guess but the trade off isn't worth it. Bling at the cost of reliability and performance...no thanks.

 to 20" wheels.

I would put it on whatever wheel is flat and drive it straight to a tire shop. There is no reason you can't drive a car safely on a donut on any corner of the car. Just don't do anything stupid. Swapping wheels around would be a huge waste of time and effort.

That is why most RWD vehicles come with the same size replacement. BTW in a FWD car the front wheels do most of the stopping too 😛

Those 20" rims are a joke to begin with. Not enough rubber to protect them from driving on most city streets without damage. The fact that they look stupid is just a bonus. Sorry you are having so much trouble. Nothing bigger than an 18" rim looks good on a Mustang anyway and at least they don't damage as easily. Enkei are not the best quality rims to begin with from my experience.

I'll never buy chromies again. Plastic or composite ftw. They don't look quite as bling but the headaches they save are worth it.
