Ok, so my father had a A/C compressor clutch/pully go bad, which destroyed the serpentine belt and damaged the end of the compressor such that we cannot just replace the pulley.
We found out that the top end of the compressor is damaged by just replacing the clutch on it with a new one from the dealership (ouch) and running it for a week. Same thing happened, and we examined the compressor to find out why.
So, I went up to Discount Auto and bought a new one for ~280$, 70$ cheaper than the dealership wanted for it. Brought it home, and lo and behold, the pulley/clutch doesnt match. Lovely. This means that the belt wont fit right (not enough extra movement allowed in the tensioner) and that it will spin slower than it's stock counterpart.
I took both parts back to DA and they checked around to make sure that its the right part. According to their catalog, it's the correct part, and it matches the picture that they show. They checked other models of the car, as well as other years. All of them use the same part. I thanked them and came back home.
It could have been that Ford has revised their part since it rolled off the factory line, but a google has failed me.
2001 Taurus SEL
3.0L DOHC V6
"Southern Package", which as far as I'm concerned, just means that they don't put leather on the inside, but potentially they changed the A/C.
Picture of the offending part next to the old one
So, good people of ATOT..... what do I do?
Edit: Part returned - we're trying another part store.
