YACT: '99 Saturn SL2 4dr sedan? Update: They got it.

Well, the '88 Honda Prelude my brothers girlfriend bought is pretty much a POS.. because the guy that did all the work on it didn't know what he was doing, and did a shoddy job.

So they're looking to trade the car in, and this is one of the cars they're looking at.

Saturn = GM right? What are some things to look out for with this car? Has about 50k miles on it. Low for being 4 years old.. not sure if that's a good or a bad thing.

I don't know the exact price they'd pay for it, around 5k.

I've got a 99 Saturn SL2. Have had no major problems with it, just routine maintenance. I've got about 63k miles on it.

I'm thinking about a saturn 2 door. The exterior looks nice, but the interior is ugly, but hey, as long as it runs.

I've got just under 60k miles on my 99 SL2. No major problems since day one. There was a hole in the exhaust pipe after a couple years, but it was replaced under warranty. It's been extremely reliable, great gas mileage and fun to drive. May not be the best looking car or have tons of useless horsepower, but it does the economy sedan role great.

Welp, they got it.

They got 2,000 tradein for the 88 Prelude, and a 3000$ loan at 12% for 1 year. The rate is probably so high because she's 19 and doesen't have a whole lot of credit history. She had trouble finding a dealership that would even finanace her.

It actually doesen't look that bad.. it's a 4 door sedan, and it looks like one. 😛

KBB says the car is worth 5700 - 6100.. so I guess they didn't get that bad of a deal.

How is the 1.9L in that car? Is it a tank, or does it need meticulous care?

I drive my car hard and it hasn't given me any problems with my lead foot. The 1.9 isn't the strongest engine in existance, but for that little car, it gets the job done.

It's the same engine from 1991-2002, so they must have done something right
Hmmm.....

That engine, like many other GM engines, is durable and reliable. It's not very quiet, it's not super powerful, it won't get the best fuel economy, and the car that it's mounted in is not that great, but at least it won't give you too much grief over its life.

I have a 2000 SW2 (wagon) and it has been a pretty decent car. The engine is pretty reliable, but will probably start to use oil after 60,000 miles or so. Just watch that. There is no problem with using oil, and it doesn't blow blue smoke. It just drinks oil. My 95 SW2 used a quart in just under 1,000 miles if I drove it on the highway hard. Around town, it was a lot better than that.

Overall, they are a good reliable cars.
