YACT: '99 Explorer with 27k - $6500

My mother is in the market for a new-used vehicle...she found a '99 Explorer Sport (two-door 4x4 V6 auto) with under 30k. She offered $6k, and they countered at $6.5k. It's in excellent condition, with little/no rust (some on the tube steps and rear bumper by the trailer ball mount). Some people are saying it's basically a no-brainer of a great deal.

However, I still think the price is a little steep..and as you probably know, I'm terribly biased. 😛 I found a '96 4Runner for $6995 (for the sake of argument, let's say they accepted $6500). V6, 4x4, SR5 package...auto trans, power windows/locks/AC/CD/sunroof/alloys, cruise..etc. Basically the same package as the Explorer, but 3 years older..and I don't believe the Explorer has a sunroof. However, it has 111,097 miles on it. Wouldn't matter to me (182k on my Tacoma), but the low miles on the Ford were a definite plus for her.

I don't have pics/link for the Explorer..sorry 🙁

Any thoughts/opinions? I don't know anything about the Explorers, so this could be an awesome deal or a terrible one..hoping someone here will know more about this than I 🙂

My father had three, all went to 200,000 miles before we sold them (still working perfectly) with the exception of a '98 which was rear-ended by a motorhome going 45mph and totaled with about 130,000 miles on it. Dad and his passenger walked away from the accident without a scratch.

Dad bought a Pilot to replace the last Explorer because he has back problems and none of the body-on-frame SUV's would suit him, but he has to carry around a few hundred pounds of semi parts for his job (sales rep for semi parts companies, his truck is always full of demo units) so a car wouldn't work for him. Aside from the ride quality, he preferred the Explorers to the Pilot.

I would say that the deal on the Explorer is a great one.

Thanks - I feel a bit better about it now. Going to have a mechanic check it out for her & that should be it! 🙂

Toyotas may be made by God but thats still a ton more miles and older for the same price and explorers aren't exactly POS either. The only downside I see with the ford is its a 2 door but if mommy doesn't care then it doesn't matter. 2 doors look better but its an SUV so I'd assume people hauling is the purpose and it can be a pain to get in and out of the back seat.

i wouldnt get an explorer...i used to have one...i even love fords to death, but the older explorers= death trap...both my brothers had one, both of them flipped it...lucky to be alive

I know it has more miles and it is older -- but it's what I would choose. However, it's not my choice..and I just want to be sure she isn't ripped off. She's only taking 2-3 kids around, since the rest of us have our own vehicles.

Again, thanks for all the input!

'99 is older? I could probably flip just about any SUV..it's the nature of the beast.

you'd be suprised.

sure you have to be loaded, but some of the more upmarket SUV's like the porsche cayenne (sp?) Audi Q7, new range rovers etc.... have some rather very clever electronic stability/traction control systems that make them very very hard to roll, if at all. its probably due to their pneumatic/air ride suspension systems.

by contrast you could flip an older range rover simply by going left then right very quick (elk test) so while it is the nature of the beast, it can be controlled.

I hope they weren't pulling that famous SUV turn technique like they do down here...crank your wheel extremely hard the opposite way you want to turn prior to turning that way...

I drive a 98 240sx SE, I had a small saturn SC2 college commuter prior to it. SUV's/big Pickups just love to tailgate me even when I am in the right lane and they have room to pass, then I try to move to the left lane and so do they...I am not sure why, but I see them doing it a lot to others as well. Unfortunately for them I have issues so sending them off road is ok with me. Bonus points when at the next red light you witness them trying to salvage their Starbucks coffee.

Now I do love the 408 powered 96 Eddie Bauer Bronco I helped build up with my dad.

Most people try to drive beyond their limits. When choosing an SUV/Truck this is a big mistake esp. after slapping 26"+ wheels on it with stock brakes and thinking you are Parnelli Jones. 🙂

to add to this, a vehicle with less than 30k on the clock is hard to come by in the older used market.

Mostly mileage is what determines how 'new or old' a vehicle is.

For $6500 it's a steal in my book if that's the vehicle you are looking for.

So because your brothers can't drive worth sh*t, it's the Explorer's fault?

I've hit road debris and blown a tire on the Explorer when I borrowed it on a trip to NH ('99 Eddie Bauer) and the truck handled it just fine. You'd have to be a ham-fisted moron and jerk the steering around like you were having a seizure to flip the thing.

My mom has an expedition going on 110k miles (2001). Thing is a tank. Been offroad and everything. No signs of rust (little was taken care of by the father). I know, they aren't the same thing, but I'd assume that the vehicle would last, and with that low of miles, go for it.
