YACT: '97 Accord

While I was going to look into getting a new car this summer, I only have 15k or so to spend on one, so it wouldn't be anything overly special. However, I just got off the phone with my father, and he said he knows someone selling a '97 accord with under 30k miles. I guess the guy bought it for his wife, and she decided she wanted to drive an SUV more. It's a 4 cylinder and 4dr. He said he thinks it's an automatic, but not 100% sure. I wanted manual transmission, but it doesn't have to be. He also didn't give me a price for it, other then it would be fair market value. I just looked up '97 accords on autotrader, and they are all going for around 10-13k from dealers.

So what do you think, should I look into this accord, even though it's 6 years old, or get a new car, but of a lower tier?

it really depends on what you want...a newer car will have a warranty...this one wouldnt...it wouldnt hurt to take a look at the car and take it to a mechanic to get checked out...then if you like it...get it!

How long do you intend on keeping this car? You could probably get that car for like 9-10K or so, and save the other 5K, and you'd have a relatively worry free car for till it hits about 100,000 miles (especially with that low mileage, but assuming it was well taken care of) if you intend on keeping it for just a few years. If you intend to keep the car a good while I'd get a lower end new car though - it's already 6 years old and counting so it's bound to have some problems somewhere down the road.

yeah i think its worth it
i just recently got a 99 accord with 42000 miles for 10,500
i love it.
i can really see my next car being a honda.

With that kind of mileage, and good treatment that car will be a steal. It has a lot more miles in it and will probably be a very good car for you. Just make sure that the car was maintained well. I can't see a reliability problem with the car as long as it was taken care of.

Yeah, I am probably going to have it for the 5 years of grad school, and then get a new one when I get a real job out of it. So for a new car, I would pay it off over 5 years, and then have no loan on it at the end.

But I would save the extra money and get a pretty nice car... decisions. I really wanted a new new car, the whole idea of it. But the Accord is just that mcuh better then the civic, getting an onlder one could be worht it.

can find anywhere to try to get a few more thousands ? You could get a new Altima (I-4 manual) for about 17k but 17k would open up a lot more options for a new car.

It's a 97 with under 30k miles. I'd say that's pretty good in itself, if the wife didn't abuse the heck out of it.

I would pay no more than $7-8k for it since that's about how much they are going for in ads from private sellers.

6 years old? whats it got, leather, sunroof? carpoint is listing blue book at just over 8K for the low end... problem is blue book has little to nothing to do with reality

No, I am going to be a poor grad student for the next 5 years. I really can't afford more then $250/month. Trust me, 15k is even more then I want to spend, but that puts me able to buy a civic or lancer ovre kias and hayundis.

I don't think that there is any "could" about it. Blue book ranges from $7,500 for an Accord DX to $10,500 for an Accord EX (with the LX slotting in between). I think that if the car is in good shape for a good price that you should go for it. It should have no problem lasting you five years.

I just bought a 99 EX 4cyl coupe for 11.5 (everything but leather). You should be able to get a 97 for much less like everyone is saying. I really like mine. If it has been well taken care of, and you take good care of it, it'll run great for a long time.

where did you find your accord Peacock?

I don't want to fix a car.... Again, I am going to be in GRAD school, I am not going to have time to think about a car, gettin it fixed, or it having problems. It just needs to make it 5 years, problem free 🙂

rwd v8 is reliable as hell.

carpont's reliablity ratings are slightly better for the mustang than the accord. of course, the oldest year they have is the '91

In the recycler. I'm really happy with it. It's a silver, 5 speed, had low miles. My mechanic checked it out, and said everything looked great. It's been running really well too. I haven't had as much chance to drive it as I would like. 2 weeks after I got it, I got chicken pox which put me out 2 weeks. I've only put 450 miles on it in a month.

I was waiting for a silver or white accord coupe 5 speed EX. I could have had a black or green one sooner, but I didn't want a dark colored car. My ideal one was a white one with the tan leather interior, but this silver one was a great deal, so I went for it. It took me about a month before I came acroos one I liked. There were 2 other silver ones I looked at. 1 was lowered and had bolt on mods, the other I think had been in an accident that the dealer was trying to hide. I said no to both, and went with mine.
